“Disruption is the art of asking better questions, challenging conventional wisdom and overturning assumptions and prejudices that get in the way of imagining new possibilities and visionary ideas.”

I sit relaxed with a cup of tea, deep in the night in the heart of fly over country listening to The Genius Of Coleman Hawkins and I ponder this quote.

I think to myself “that’s the kind of thinking that put a man on the moon”. That is the aesthetic of punk. That is the essence of spirituality. What great thinker distilled all of this wisdom for us? Plato? Thomas Jefferson? Miles Davis? Jesus??

Alas, none of the above, the winning answer; an ad guy. No bull, this taken from an advertising agency’s (TBWA) website.

Here is an example of their work.

It is from a new campaign for the new Sony Playstation. The term TBWA uses is “Disruptive Advertising”. New term for shock value. I am offended but I have to admire the showbiz quotient.

Where does it lead?

If Ive seen it, it’s working. Leads to more of the same.

I spent the afternoon recording Sam Clanton. Sam is a newspaper editor/musician/songwriter. He is a talented guy. He is very aware of tradition but not bound by it.

Sam has been working on an album and I have been producing a few tracks. We are developing a yin-yang relationship. He has a go for it and get it attitude, I tend to fret over technical issues. You can get his first album Whiskey Before Breakfast at amazon.com. I believe he recorded this while still in college and he’s coming from a different space now. Check it out and see how he evolves.

My nice neighbor lady came over tonight. The cable company accidentally shut her cable off while shutting mine off. She was disappointed that she couldn’t watch the Cardinals. I felt bad and somehow responsible and all I could think of to say was “they’re just as bad on the radio”.

According to the dictionary sitting on my computer desk, to disrupt is to interrupt, or to throw into turmoil or disorder. I guess in that respect their use of it as to challenge and overturn assumptions isn’t a bad one, although I would question whether the definition really includes new possibilities and visionary ideas. I suspect your suggestion that it is merely a polite cover for the term shock value isn’t far from the mark.

Thanks Stephanie, I was thinking about what I wrote here and, there is one thing that’s bugging me. When I said I admire the showbiz quotient, I was thinking of acts like Alice Cooper or Sam Kinison, that use shock value as a tool. It’s a time honored practice. I am having a hard time remebering many performers using this device with such disregard for peoples feelings. The more I see this picture, the more it disturbs me.
