I’ve been away from the computer all weekend, actually I’ve just been away. I got home and the grass had grown.
I have seen several headlines lately that read, World War 3?, or something similar. I see this as sensationalism. I had the opportunity to watch some of the cable news coverage, (CNN, Fox, MSNBC), over the weekend. It may just be me but I get the feeling that the media in general is almost hoping it does turn out to be a World War. They remind me of buzzards circling a sick calf. The truth is nobody knows how the situation turns out (ever see a headline that reads”Psychic Wins Lottery!Again”). Facts are by nature boring and, it does not take a twenty-four hour cycle to tell them.
The gig went O.K. Saturday night. There was an underlying tenseness in the air. Sometimes it’s just that way. Some performers put a lot of stock in “controlling an audience”. When the whole room seems edgy, all you can accomplish is whipping them up until something violent happens. After the show Mark and I went to Denny’s and a fight broke out between two women. They had to call the cops and the people in the restaurant were chanting, “Jerry! Jerry!”. It was that kind of night.
I caught a set by a new Springfield band The Rugs on Thursday night. Lead singer Matt Dampier is the main songwriter from what I understand. The players are my pals Lou Whitney, Eric Schuchmann, Ritchie Rebuth, Donnie Thompson, and Donnie Kraft. This was only their second gig but two things stand out. One, this band is about songs. Two, they do not waste time delivering the songs to you. Check them out if you get a chance, one record is available now and another on the way.
