Billions and Billions

In 1900, U.S. Steel became the first billion dollar company. Yesterday, Yahoo lost over 10 billion dollars in stock value. I have worked as an iron worker. I know the value of good steel. Steel is tangible; you can build a bridge with it. I am not sure what Yahoo is. I know it is the most trafficked website in the world. I know they garner advertising revenue but I still have a tough time comprehending it.

Lou Whitney and I had a conversation a while ago and Lou said, “The industrial age is over. Rugged individualism is a thing of the past”. That is a hard pill to swallow if it’s true. I love the idea of someone coming out of nowhere with a better product and making their fortune.

A few years ago when I was working with iron, steel was actually cheaper than wood. The steel we used came from Japan. They would import iron ore and old steel, then process it on ships and bring it right back to the states. Therefore, the steel was a product of Japan but it never came geographically close to Japan.

As for rugged individualism, take the case of Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson. These are the guys that started MySpace.com. They sold their company, Intermix Media, to Rupert Murdoch for $629 million. You may have a hard time picturing my friend Tom as rugged but these guys figured out what the consumers wants and needs were. They produced a better product than their competitors and had the stones to pull it off.

Yoga

I have received a lot of information from the M.S. Society. One of the types of exercise that they recommend is yoga. This is something I can honestly say that I had never considered. I don’t even recall any conversation with anybody I know about yoga.

With M.S. it is widely accepted that an exercise program will help in coping with the disease but some things such as weightlifting or running could exacerbate the symptoms. One thing you need to be careful of is getting overheated. So, yoga sounded interesting to me.

I had my first session yesterday. My instructor, Loa Freeman, was a delight. She owns the highly recommended Success Naturally studio in Springfield. She showed me three simple poses, which I duplicated with limited success this morning. I feel very encouraged, as I seem to have a little more energy after only doing this simple routine twice.

Band Stuff

The first rehearsal for the full band is scheduled for Friday night. I am looking forward to it, it will be fun to air some of these songs out.
