I don’t listen to much music on the radio. There isn’t much music on the radio in these parts that I find interesting. A lot of times I will end up listening to some form of talk radio. Pretty slim pickin’s there too, angry old men talking politics, ex-athletes, Preachers, and the nap inducing N.P.R. crowd.

Lately all of the commercial stations have been glutted with these inane campaign ads. It may be that as I grow older my tolerance for this crap is lessening. It may be that the ads are getting more stupid. The worst ones are where two fictional citizens are ostensibly meeting for coffee or the like and they discuss a political candidate, “I heard he/she said this”, “I learned that he didn’t even show up to vote on this”, “She supported this guy that went to jail for corruption”.

It’s kind of like if you ask a group of kids “who broke this window?”. “Not me”, “I don’t know”, “I just got here”.

It is pointless, mind numbing and embarrassing.

So, today I had a meeting, about a 45 minute drive. I turned on the radio and I couldn’t take it any more. I have a six C.D. changer in my trunk but I think it’s all full of demo’s from projects (projects!?!?!) I have been working on, anything is better than the pablum.

Discs 1-5 were the demo’s, to my surprise and delight the last spot held the first of the three disc Frank Zappa set, Lather. It was a great escape from the constant barrage of useless information that is targeted to the lowest common denominator.

This evening I found a Playboy magazine interview that was done in 1993.

These are a couple of quotes I found interesting.

Frank Zappa:”I like carrying things to their most ridiculous extreme because out there on the fringe is where my type of entertainment lies”.

“I don’t want to see any religious people in public office because they’re working for another boss”.

Playboy: You obviously don’t believe songs can make people kill or rape or commit suicide.

Frank Zappa: “There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something, we’d all love one another”.

Regarding the unconventional names that he gave his kids,

Playboy: Would they have been different had you named them Sally or John?

Frank Zappa: “It’s the last name that gets them into trouble”.

I haven’t listened to much music at all in the past year, which is sad to say. After having a minor fender-bender last year, I have kept my radio turned off while I’m driving to try to keep from being distracted. I hadn’t given it much thought, but I realize I haven’t heard anything new or interesting in a long time.
It’s been fun reading your posts, Jack! I can’t remember the last time we talked. Maybe 8 years ago, when I was thinking of paying you and Terri a visit but never made it down south.
Congratulations on the CD! I listened to the sample cuts, and hearing your voice and guitar brought back lots of good memories.
I was sad to hear that you have been diagnosed with MS. I don’t know much about it, but I checked out your link to the National MS Society to try to gain some perspective. Hang in there and take good care of yourself. You’re on the right track.

Watermang, I was thinking I knew who this is but something doesn’t make any sense. The girl I know was last seen cruising in a muscle car with Black Sabbath blaring on the stereo and wouldn’t let a little fender bender phase her. Must be someone else.
