Initial Mitchell Report Info

Posted on | December 13, 2007 | No Comments

The Mitchell report is now out and Clemens is named. This is from Breitbart/AP.

“We identify some of the players who were caught up in this drive to gain a competitive advantage,” the report said. “Other investigations will no doubt turn up more names and fill in more details, but that is unlikely to significantly alter the description of baseball’s `steroids era’ as set forth in this report.”

So, the “Steroids Era” is now official. Here is a partial list of present and former players named in the report.

Roger Clemens
Miguel Tejada
Andy Pettitte
Barry Bonds
Gary Sheffield
Eric Gagne
Jason Giambi
Troy Glaus
Gary Matthews Jr.
Jose Guillen
Brian Roberts
Paul Lo Duca (WTF?)
Rick Ankiel
Kevin Brown
Benito Santiago
Lenny Dykstra (Say it ain’t so, not Nails!)
Chuck Knoblauch (proof that steroids do not enhance one’s fielding ability)
David Justice
Mo Vaughn

Mitchell talks to those responsible including former used car salesman, team owner and present commissioner, Bud Selig.

“Everyone involved in baseball over the past two decades—commissioners, club officials, the players’ association and players—shares to some extent the responsibility for the steroids era,” Mitchell said. “There was a collective failure to recognize the problem as it emerged and to deal with it early on.”

The report pretty much confirms what we already knew.

I have said many times that numbers (individual statistics), are more important in Baseball than any other sport. The numbers are for the fans. The numbers are what bridge the generation gaps. They are valuable because they allow us to compare players from different eras. That is one thing that makes baseball special, fans can have hours of conversation comparing Ty Cobb to Rickey Henderson, Walter Johnson to Nolan Ryan, Babe Ruth to Barry Bonds. In doing this, we know that the numbers are skewed by variables from era to era. I have also said that what baseball needs to do is, define the “Steroids Era”. Until the era is defined, the discussion can not resume. Time will tell if Mitchell got it right. But, this report is, at the very least, a step in the right direction.

So, for the first time in a long time, I can say; Good for baseball.
