The New Years Eve gig went fine.
It’s about a 30 mile drive from the Winnebago’s front door to the club; takes about 45 minutes usually. It was around 7:15 when I left last night and there wasn’t a soul on the road. Normally, I run into some traffic somewhere along the line but, not last night. Maybe because the big night fell on a Monday, I don’t know.
The crowd seemed unusually subdued for a New Year’s too. Not in a bad way, just wasn’t the typical reckless abandon, party with a vengeance attitude that I have traditionally seen.
This place gives last call at 12:45 and tries to have everyone out the door by 1:00. At 12:30, the local cops pulled someone over, right across the street from the club. The cruiser’s lights were flashing through the front windows. We were playing “Sunshine Of Your Love”, the old Cream song. When we started the song, there were maybe 40 people in the bar area, which packs this small place. By the time we ended the tune, there were two guys left sitting at the bar.
We couldn’t have cleared that place out faster if we’d have said; “We’re going to play some original songs off our next C.D.”. Never saw anything like it.
By the way, we did do a version of “Auld Land Syne” and sure enough, we went through the routine of scrambling around to figure out lyrics and arrangement right before the last set; like it was a pre-arranged skit.
