Those of you who have been following this blog from the start (which would be like, none of you), will remember that I am a big fan of the Eels and, that I think “Blinking Lights And Other Revelations” is one of the finer things in life.

Perhaps, the thing I like best about that record and the Eels is that, I have told many people; “hey, check this out”, I have loaned my copy of “Blinking Lights…” to many as well, in an effort to convert them to way the Eel. You know how, when you play an album that you like for somebody and, you want them to like it but, you know that they don’t, even though they don’t come right out and say it; they are being polite? Not the case with the Eels, in my experience. Every single person that I have attempted to grace with Eel enlightenment has said; “I just don’t like that”. This, of course, delights me to no end.

Critically acclaimed and generally accepted singer/songwriter/guitarist Warren Zanes (who is real good by the way) once said to me; “So you’re an Eels fan.”

That was pretty cool.

Hey Warren, you said you were going to send me a mix tape. What up G? I saw you on the P.B.S. thing and I said: “Hey, I know that guy.”, and the whole room full of people briefly looked at me-literally.

Anyway, I saw this thing a while back about how the Eels were going to play London’s Royal Festival Hall and that main Eel, E sent the Queen of England an actual letter inviting her to personally attend. Then I saw this at NME.

The monarch did not attend the show – Eels recruited a lookalike to fill their royal void – however, E has revealed Buckingham Palace did RSVP.

“The Queen’s Lady In Waiting sent me a letter informing me that it would be ‘impossible’ for the Queen to attend our show at Royal Festival Hall,” he explained. “This is the fourth time we’ve played Royal Festival Hall, and I was determined to see a queen sitting in the royal box this time.

“So we got The Queen’s lookalike and everyone on my staff and at the hall was instructed to play along and let me have my fantasy. It was truly a thrill to have The Queen in attendance. And she loved the show, by the way.”

Yeah I know, it’s not much of a story but, you know-slow day.

Here is a video of a brilliant slab of, what should have been pop music, “Trouble With Dreams”. As with most really good songs, the video is pretty stupid. But, you can always close your eyes or look the other way.

I don’t remember you ever telling me about the Eels. I like what I’ve heard so far. Tell me, what CD should I get to start with?

    Pribek,

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning Warren Zanes! I’d never heard of him before, and I’m just diggin’ his music! I’m totally into that kind of rockin’, chill vibe right now with my own songwriting.

Also, totally cool that you’re producing music in defiance of your condition. I applaud you for driving onward!

How come you have never played the Eels for me Daddy Jack?
I listened to them and really like em. They kind of sound a little bit like Lou Reed, kind of.

Toys, I like Lou Reed a bunch. I guess I was kind of surprised…a little bit because…Out of all the times, through the years, that we have sat around at Country Mile listening to, and talking about music; I don’t recall either one of us ever bringing up Lou Reed.
