Last year I wrote a post about Queen guitarist/astrophysicist, Brian May, “Brian May-Interstellar Feller”.

Today we have this news.

Queen’s Brian May today succeeded former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s wife, Cherie, as the chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

May’s appointment, which was watched by over 500 people, comes less than a year after he successfully completed an astrophysics PhD which he abandoned in the 1970s to pursue his music career.

Dr May was awarded his PhD last August for a 48,000 word thesis, entitled, A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud.

May, not satisfied with being a hugely successful rock star and astrophysicist has added University Chancellor to his gaudy resume.

Once again, congratulations Brian May. I believe that this chancellor thing pulls you slightly ahead of Department of Defense consultant and Chairman of Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, on the list of top guitar players whose mission in life is to make the rest of us look like imbeciles.

Thanks again-I’ll just be sitting here, with my guitar, thinking about changing strings.

Heck, I’ve been thinking about changing strings for so long that the packs have rusted together. I almost convinced myself once that playing on dull strings made me play harder and thus I could have that extra donut (or two) because of all the calories I was burning. I should have studied String Theory in college; –then I could teach those stupid quarks not to rust. Brian May made me like delays. You go, Brian (–you overeducated guitar rockin’ university-running, sequin cape-wearing cool dude, you)!

@Pat RE: Cape & B. May. It’s a reference to a video I show in class about the recording of “A Night at the Opera” which features a clip of a cape-wearing Mr. May playing guitar in a Hyde Park concert (I think). A glittery white cape. It sticks in my mind because I don’t remember any other guitar players wearing capes onstage…

Brian May deserves all our respect from this point of view, there are not many who after such a career go back to study and get such kind of degrees. Actually I can’t think of anybody else…

Now being involved in university business, will he lose high school and university fans? Being a rebel rock star doesn’t quite fit there anymore… :-)
