Tonight’s episode could prove to be very revealing. In fact, this particular topic for Friday Night Cage Match/Fondue Party/Evolving Conversation/Dancing About Architecture could be used as part of a psychological profile.
The two subjects have much in common.
They are both icons.
They have both been in the news recently.
They have both been subjects of blog posts here, in the last week.
Tonight children’s, it’s all about Neil;
Neil Diamond or Neil Young?
As always, any line of reason, logic or, lack thereof is fair game.

They didn’t have to rotoscope coke out of Neil Diamond’s nose in The Last Waltz. That decides it for me.

They’re both veterans w/ long careers; I like Neil Young’s older material, but lately he’s more political than the Dixie Chicks.
Wait; –one of the Dixie Chicks sings a duet with Diamond on his new album (Home Before Dark). And the chicks have toned things down a bit…
Who knew that Sweet Caroline was JFK’s daughter? That’s a little creepy, Neil… How old was she when you wrote that? 12? But I’ve never heard a live act cover that song without everyone in the whole joint singing along.
Didn’t Neil Young give Charlie Manson a motorcycle? You’re creepy too, Neil…
I vote for the Dixie Chicks.

I liked Neil Young when I was young. I couldn’t tell you when the last time was that I heard anything of his. I think he might also have been (or is) dead.
Neil Diamond works for me this last year. Fessing up to that makes me feel all of 46, but it shouldn’t. I enjoy his singing and the songs that he sings. He makes me think of the old “crooners” like Sinatra. It makes me feel nostalgic.
Neil Young gave Charlie Manson a motorcycle???!!!
“Sweet Caroline”-JFK’s daughter!!!???
That’s why I love these things, I didn’t know anything about any of that. Interesting to note the contrasting social sets these guys was running with in the day.
Sans, sounds you got some inside info man.
Jayne, Neil Young isn’t dead, he just smells funny.
I thought that Neil’s white face powder and his groping Joni backstage were fairly common knowledge. It’s even in Wi Key Peed Ya. “A large blob of cocaine hanging from Neil Young’s nose was edited out in post-production through rotoscoping.”

Cocaine Schmokaine-”groping Joni backstage” is where I woke up. I got to say I’m leaning towards the Godfather of Grunge based on purely on gropage at this point.
I’ll be back later. I got to go see a man about a crazy horse.
He is old, he is young. B)
Watching VH1Classic right now. The Last Waltz is on. The Band backing Joni as I type. Always been my favorite part of the thing.

Yeah, that’s pretty cool. I had the album that song “Coyote” was on. The album was called “Hejira”, I think. Jaco on bass, great track. The band did a whole different slant they’re both real nice.
Neil Young all the way.
The first band I was in was actually a performing, professional (in name if not in performance!) 5 piece band called March Hare. It was 1972, I’d just got “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” and one of our first gigs was looming. We didn’t have enough of the finely crafted close harmony work of our first set (Beatles, Hollies, Beach Boys, Four Seasons) to complete the second set. I suggested Down By The River by Neil Young - “We can make it last as long as we want” I said (even though I played guitar in my head way better than in reality).
We gave it a shot at a rehearsal. Gloriou smayhem.
The gig arrived - a little place called Waldridge Fell in the North East of England. There was a celebration going on - a young couple were getting married - the bride was soon to be a mother, if you get my drift. The workingmen’s club was full.
We started our first set - “Let’s Hang On” The Four Seasons followed by a medley of Beach Boys songs that we’d strained over for weeks. Not a single person clapped. No response whatsoever. We played our trump card - The Beatles - everybody loved The Beatles. Not this night.
We finished the first set as quick as we could and hid in the dressing room. About the same time I’d been honing my acoustic fingerpicking skills by learning some tunes off a Stefan Grossman album - “Vestapol” was (and still is) a favourite. I suggested that we start with that, throw in “Down By The river”, there were a few others I can’t remember, but “Johnny B Goode” was there and the big finish - “Born To be Wild”, with a feedback-laden feedback solo from me.
I went out for the start of the second set with only my acoustic guitar for protection. I fumble dnervously through Vestapol. I got a wild round of applause. “More guitar music” somebody shouted.
The rest of the band joined me and we decided it was make or break - “Down By The River”.
The rest of the night is a blur even after all of this time - the audience thought we were great, wouldn’t let us stop playing (I took three solos in “Johnny B Goode” - and I only knew one!) and we became instant stars. We were invited to go across the street to continue the party where we were given huge tumblers of whisky. We eventually escaped in the early hours of the morning.
So, Neil Young (Don’t get me started on the number of hours I spent as a lonely depressed teenager in my room listening to his acoustic stuff)
