Last week, Gary left this comment in a gig announcement post for a Thirst N’ Howl gig.

Hey Jack, me and some fellow musicians here in the UK would be interested in seeing a typical thirst n howl setlist. maybe post it here or to me and I’ll blog it - whatever works. Cheers!

O.K. Gary, here goes. This would be a typical night for TNH which, hopefully means four 45 minute sets of cover tunes that the audience is going to be somewhat familiar with.

So, like I said, we aren’t trying to come up with b-sides or obscure tunes to cover, we are trying for things that audience is going recognize instantly. Within that framework, there is room set aside to blow a little and a couple of things that are carried by the strength of the particular groove. These guys are all pros and a joy to play music with.

Brandi Shortt-vocals
Boyd Manning-drums
Tom Hobson-keyboards
Allen Edwards-bass

By the way everybody sings, including myself, which is a real help when you are playing a wide range of stuff over four sets. The first key to a good cover band is having credible vocals. And, having an outstanding and fearless singer like Brandi (Brandi at MySpace) out front makes it possible to really take flight.

well, should the day ever come when i get across to the states, I’ll bring my telecaster. There’s a good portion of every set that I’d be happy to sit in on - I must send you my version of Messin’ With The Kid from my last band. Nice to see some Susan tedeschi too, I introduced the female singer from my last band to her work and we ended up covering a couple of tunes - “It Hurt So Bad” was a crowd pleaser.

Oh, here in the UK we play 2×45 minute sets. (Well, the last set might go to an hour, if the crowd like you,) lucky us, eh?

You’d be welcome any time Gary. Yeah, I’d like to hear your
“Messin’ W/Kid”, I started doing that song a long time ago after hearing Johnny Winter do it. I heard Johnny’s the other day and and I’m doing a completely different thing than what I started. I’ve been hearing Junior’s version on AccuRadio and he has some humor in the way he sings particularly the hook. I’ve been trying to get a little of that.
Two sets! Very civilized actually, more like a presentation should be.
I’ve done gigs that were 6-8 sets believe it or not. One in St. Lou that started 4:30 in the afternoon and went ’til 1:30 a.m. And, J will get a kick out of this-I remember a road gig in Dothan, Alabama that was 9:00-4:30, seven nights a week.

No kidding J, it was a bad deal. It was in early ’90s. If I remember right, the place was called Drifters lounge. We were there for three weeks. This place, on like a Tuesday at 3:00 a.m., there would be two people in there and the club owner would threaten to dock us if we were a couple minutes late on break.
They had an apartment rented for the bands and the beds were all children’s bunk beds. Some band before us stole all the mattresses. If you have ever bought kid’s bunk beds you know that the “box spring” is really just a frame that’s about two inches thick with some slats and covered with fabric. That’s what we had to sleep on, that or the floor. There wasn’t much room on the floor so, we took turns. The floor was better than the beds, you see.
We were all sleep deprived and loony as hell after three weeks and no night off.
