A couple of years ago, grandson Garrett (almost four, at the time) and I went out for a drive. Garrett said; “Papa Jack, can you please put up the window? There’s too much air on my hair.”
I said, “Garrett, you made a rhyme, air and hair!”
“Air on hair, air on hair-too much air on the hair”.
And, it went on that way for days. The whole idea of rhyming delighted him and he started to experiment with all the possible combinations in his vocabulary and even started to make up words if he could not locate the suitable rhyme.
This morning, Garrett’s sister Laura (now four) and I were playing keep away with a plastic banana. At one point in frustration she said; “If you don’t give me the banana, I’m going to go tell Nana.”
“Laura, you made a rhyme, Nana-Banana!”
“Nana Banana, Nana Banana, Banana, Nana.”
And so, another child enters the age of rhyme. Surely, more fun than the age of reason and instantly gratifying to boot. Seems to happen somewhere around quatro with this bunch.
