Election gambling is one of those things that intrigues me. I guess this is why; a bookie, unlike a pundit, is going to sink or swim by his production. These guys on CNN/Fox/MSNBC and all of the political blogs, they can be influenced by how they feel. Not a bookie though, if a bookie does that, he won’t be in business long.
Are you wondering who the running mates for Obama and McCain will be? Here are the odds from Bodog.
The Democrats…
Hillary Clinton- 5/2
Jim Webb- 7/2
John Edwards- 9/2
Bill Richardson- 8/1
Kathleen Sebelius- 10/1
Wesley Clark- 10/1
Ted Strickland- 15/1
Al Gore- 20/1
Joseph Biden- 20/1
Michael Bloomberg- 25/1
Janet Napolitano- 25/1
Evan Bayh- 30/1
Hillary is the clear favorite. I would still like to see Kathleen Sebelius get it just because, I’m still getting a bunch of search engine traffic from this and this.
The Republicans…
Bobby Jindal- 7/2
Tim Pawlenty- 9/2
Lindsey Graham- 8/1
Tom Ridge- 17/2
Mitt Romney- 8/1
Mike Huckabee- 10/1
Joseph Lieberman- 12/1
Chris Cox- 15/1
Condoleezza Rice- 15/1
David Petraeus- 20/1
Michael Bloomberg- 25/1
Rudy Giuliani- 20/1
Jeb Bush 35/1
Ron Paul- 35/1
Fred Thompson- 40/1
Fred Thompson must have really irked some folks to be coming in behind Jeb Bush and Ron Paul. Note that Michael Bloomberg made both lines and, at 25/1 on both.
By the way, at this point, Obama is the favorite in a big way, much more so than any poll I’ve seen.
John McCain +175
Barack Obama -260
If you bet on Obama, you’ll have to risk $260 to win $100. If you bet on McCain, you stand to win $175 for every $100 you wager

Hillary may be the odds-on favorite for VP, but if I was Barack, I would never ever ever choose her.
By announcing so publicly, she’s trying to push her way in, and that means it’s her choice, not his, and you don’t want to be ridden roughshod by your own VP.
Also, I really wouldn’t want to be the person whose continuing pulse keeps Hillary out of the Oval Office.

That’s a different slant there, Sans. Are you saying that Obama’s continuing pulse would somehow be threatened if Hillary were down the hall?

Why would Hillary be the favorite? I was thinking about that last night as I drove over to T’s for dinner. Like I said, it doesn’t mean that bookie “thinks” she’ll be the running mate, it’s a reflection of the number of people, that are willing to lay money on it, that think she’ll be the running mate.
So, I made it a point to watch some of the coverage on CNN/FOX/MSNBC. You know, all these outlets seem to have an endless supply of “former advisor’s” that are now commentator’s. They are interchangeable so, I don’t have any names off the top of my head. But all of these experts seemed to be leaning toward the likeliness of Hillary as running mate and, that it would unite the party.
And, I’m thinking to myself; that just doesn’t make sense, something is goofy with all of that.
Then, on the way home, I heard Christopher Hitchens on some talk radio show. Hitchens was saying that, anyone who thinks Hillary is going to be the nominee is absolutely nuts. Now, he didn’t say anything about the “Clinton Body Count” stuff but, what you said; “By announcing so publicly, she’s trying to push her way in, and that means it’s her choice, not his, and you don’t want to be ridden roughshod by your own VP.” was real close to part of Hitchens reasoning. Further though, Hitchens said something to the effect that, in no way, is Obama going to allow Bill to be part of his everyday life.
As I pulled in, they were talking about the Vanity Fair article. If you have not read it, here’s the link.
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/07/clinton200807
And, I thought about how Bill responded to the article by calling the author, Todd S. Purdum, husband of Dee Dee Meyers, a “scumbag”.
I also thought about a post that D. Martyn Lloyd-Morgan wrote well before the Vanity Fair piece. Martyn’s post is called “Pump Head Bill”.
http://thelibertysphere.blogspot.com/2008/05/pump-head-bill.html
Given all of that, plus what you said, Sans-I don’t think that Hillary can be the running mate.

I watch Jon Stewart, the Daily Show. Jon Stewart had John McCain on for the talking heads segment a week or ten days ago. [McCain arrived without his wife, unfortunately.]
But at some point Sen McCain pulled a post it out of his coat pocket, and said it contained the name of his running mate.
But Jon Stewart interjected “Do you know who you should pick for your running mate? Hillary.”
McCain, didn’t say no, he just kept trying to tell the name on the post it… but Stewart wouldn’t hear it… “Hillary Clinton.”
So, I was in the same humor that night… and I am surprised that we don’t see that tri-fecta ticket in your referenced article, eh?
Are there any odds on that proposal?

I kinda liked Bill Richardson. He’s the only Democrat candidate who had the resume to be in the Oval Office, in my opinion. In fact, I think he has a better resume than John McCain. I am not a big fan of Senators becoming Presidents, because I think they bring in the wrong skill set. They’ve usually never managed anything bigger than their congressional office. Too bad he was totally uninspiring on the trail. But he could be VP. Could be Cheney to Obama’s Bush.
The reason why Obama/Clinton makes more sense is that you have a very split Dem electorate, and what will bring the angrier Clinton voters to the Obama camp? Making Clinton part of the Obama camp. But the furthest place from the Presidency is the Vice Presidency as a Democrat. The last successful Democrat to pull the VP-to-P conversion without the death of the incumbent is Martin Van Buren in 1837. If she never wants to seen again, or she has other plans, then the Vice Presidency is perfect for her.
And perhaps for her husband, Bill. The pumphead idea is interesting, but my take is that Bill thinks that Hillary taking the top spot would push him toward the back of the history book, and for the sake of his legacy, Hillary must be stopped. Also, can you imagine a hell worse for a former president than being the First Gentleman? So, he provides the singularly least helpful campaign support he can to try to avoid that.

Being the “Second Gentleman”
Big talk right now is a “secret” meeting between Hillary and Obama at Feinstein’s crib.
The McCain/Clinton ticket, had not even entered my mind. I have this bizarre mental image of John & Cindy & Bill & Hillary playing spades at a card table in the White House kitchen, drinking frosty Michelob Lite’s eating crab puffs and listening to “The Gift” by the Velvet Underground, on vinyl.

Second Gentleman: I think being first would be worst, as that would be a bit historical tidbit long after the stained dress is forgotten. Being Second Gentleman would leave him a bit out of the spotlight.
My goodness. McCain/Clinton? Eep. I’ve heard of Hillary supporters threatening to cross over, but the candidate? The only possible things they’d agree on are things I’d hate.
