Ever wonder what there is to do in Antarctica during the winter?

From Rueters.

Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them.

“Since everybody knows everyone, it becomes a little bit uncomfortable”

Well sure, it’s got to be a little embarrassing to go to the Antarctica drug store to buy condoms all the time. But 16,500! That sure seems like it ought to be plenty. Those scientists must be a randy bunch.

How many people do they have there during the off-peak time.

About 125 scientists and staff are stationed at McMurdo base, the largest community in Antarctica, during the winter months when there is constant darkness.

Let’s do the math.

16,500 condoms/125 scientists and staff=132 condoms apeice

Supply flights resume in September which is 83 days away so…
132 condoms per person/83 days=roughly 1.6 condoms per day-per person

But wait…each of those 1.6 condoms per day-per person would presumably, be shared with another person. So it actually works out like this; there are sufficient condoms for each person the engage in sex 3.2 times per day during the Antarctic winter.

Well, I guess all we can do is hope that’s enough.

Hey, maybe it isn’t SEX, but rather Romance, and the pursuits of a Green Heart… and to jibe means lots of rubber:

These principles have been the codified standards of nature documentaries since the rise of the conservation movement in the seventies. That’s when the old guard-Marlin Perkins, et al. looking like scholarly Hemingways in their khaki safari garb and broadcasting weekly episodes of men dominant among the kingdom of beasts-turned over the watch to Wild America, for example. (That sturdy PBS series and paean to modern ecology, was soaked in piety and sentimentality, with ideals as furry as Marty Stauffer, its hirsute host.) Forty years later, the hairstyles have changed again but the values guiding nature documentaries have not. (The late Steve Irwin, with the Discovery channel, resurrected the man vs beast format with an extreme-sports spin for the Mountain Dew generation, but even the Croc Hunter had a green heart.)

This formula endures because it works. It re-enforces what we want to believe about the wild nature. The romantic notions our culture maintains about the value of wilderness and wild nature do not always jibe with our relationship to it. But we read these values into our relationship to the place when we send people to Antarctica to study and explore, so the films we make about our experience here are testimonials to that purpose.

Thanks to Pribek and Sans for providing this angle on humanity and non-living conditions…

    I really can’t stay - Baby it’s cold outside
I’ve got to go away - Baby it’s cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you’d drop in
So very nice - I’ll hold your hands, they’re just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what’s your hurry
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I’d better scurry - Beautiful, please don’t hurry
well Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some music on while I pour

Very interesting math, Jack! These guys also work or what?! I think that you should also count the time spent having sex 3.2 times per day and you would probably find that they are either not working too much either too tired to work the next day, right?!! :-D

I’m glad somebody brought that up Ovidiu, good work.
It seems to me that 3.2 times a day would be time consuming as well as tiring; if you are doing it right.

  8. Sans Direction wrote,

I haven’t thought too deeply on the math, as I have my own intellectually stimulating problems to work with, but don’t you need two people to effectively use a condom?

Which pushes it up to 6.4 times a day.
