People are making a big deal about this new Snoop song, “My Medicine”, saying that Dog has gone country.
Maybe, but this track owes more to J.J. and the Tulsa groove than it does to Nashville.
Johnny Cash, American gangster?
As always, with the YouTube, just click pause on the music player to your left.
J.J. Cale, American gangster; now, there might be something to that.

I got more of a cajun crooner dialect peg-leg sam draught, listening to Snooping Dog, like that cajun Druid Bob Dylan during his slave magic snooping around Joan Baez period, Maggie’s Farm… but who have any of these characters Gangsta’d lately? I gotta ask, other’n JJ Cale..
All you need is a mouth harp, banjo and a triangle, yeeesh.

Years ago, there was this mid-season replacement. I forget the title, but it was more or less the A-Team meets the Mod Squad. Cons used by the government to con other cons. In one ep, they make Ice-T into a country star. When his lip-sync tape breaks, he breaks “Folsom Prison Blues” into a deep gangsta rap groove.
Hell, “El Paso” is “Six in the Morning” with another backing track. Marty Robbins was the first gangsta rapper.
I’m not 100% on that song, but I’m not one to say that Snoop can’t be the next big hick-hop artist.

I have seen that movie, I remember it. It seemed so strange seing Ice-T playing country and frankly, this video here seems nothing like Snoop Dog. But, hey, I guess he can try different things and styles, as an experiment.
@Jack: Is this thing released and promoted or is it just a “link bait” released over the internet to make people speak about it?

It’s released. It’s on the Ego Trippin’ album that was released at the end of March. The official video for the song just came out a couple of days ago.

It is a heck of a thing, that Snoop track.
He might’ve been moved by that Gourds cover of “Gin and Juice” with the mando front and center that was just pure fun.

Comedy Team: Yet another Gangsta Folk Crossover,,, “freestylin’ it from New York… my rhymes are so potent…”
Ovidiu, consider the lull in the “music bidness” and lack of creativity.. aptly described in here by Pribe’ and fellow curmudgeons.. then look at what is the filler: but screw and rap?
What monotone sing-song style popularizes heartache and fate, sung rythmically to choruses of catchy pop quippings? You guessed it: Hank Williams!!
When the gamblers [you know Lords of London underwriter types] don’t have any interest in an industry, the angel money is either diverted to another interest, or hoarded. Accordingly, Corporations are cash heavy right now, waiting for the IT industry to settle out before making any more huge commitments. That’s the crux of our green USA “recession.”
So I have suggested Rap has been the New Folk evolving from convict culture in my tired parlay. When it came to me somewhere in time at a place — while listening to my number two, Vinnie, son’s outlandish boom stereo in his Chevy trunk. He was working through his gestalt of gangsta culture that was his youth experience. I was moved in the good sense, by the local-made screw tapes he played that day four years ago.
Therefore, rap is the preamble to what ever is on the horizon. Could it be that simple?
My brother Dave often comes out with zingers: “If every American buying a car this week goes out and buys a Chevy, all the problems with the economy would be settled for another year.”
If every American buying music this week goes out right now and buys Snooping Dog’s gangsta folk “My medicine…” the music bidnesses’ problems would be all over for at least a year.
I like it too, and I have been waiting for someone to step up and put it together, gangsta folk… and who but pound for pound Dog Pound Snoopy as a tribute to King Cash??? Its my opinion, and I’m stikkin’ tuit>>>

I will amend my remark. Chucka-chucka brushes/snare, octave lower double on the vocal, slide fills accentuating end of the verse, 1 flat3 1 structure; Snoop is trying to sound like J.J. Cale.
