MAYOR JOHN HICKENLOOPER PROCLAIMS “WIDESPREAD PANIC DAY” IN DENVER

At the end of Widespread Panic’s sold-out run this weekend, the band will have played 32 Sold Out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre - more than any other band in the venue’s history. Red Rocks officials will honor the band with a special award presentation, and a mayoral proclamation calling Friday, June 27 “Widespread Panic Day” in the City and County of Denver.

Something about “Widespread Panic Day” just sounded funny to me.

Hope nobody gets the wrong idea.

Hickenlooper? With a name like Hickenlooper, living in Denver has to be a barrel of laughs.

    From the Denver Post:

DENVER — Warning to Southern delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver this August: it will be a no-fry zone.

As part of the effort to make the August 25-28 convention the greenest ever, the Democrats’ guidelines for food catering include one that strikes at the heart of Southern cuisine: no fried food.

No fried chicken. No fried catfish. No fried green tomatoes. No fried okra. No fried anything.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include “at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.”

“It’s the new patriotism,” says Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the driving force behind the greening of the Democratic convention.

I get this mental image of some outsider, someone not well versed in Jam Band culture, riding in to town and seeing a banner that say “Widespread Panic Day”. And, this gut thinks, when in Rome do as the Romans do, right? So, he goes in to an all out rampage.

    That’s how I read it, Dr J.

I have lots of acquaintances who have derived a knowledge base that prohibits me from entering with my lower level of intelligence.

Many of my esteemed latent hippie peers have brought forth the teachings of 1962 anarchy to the present. The only problem with most of my distinguished Nam Vet home-schooled child rearing second hand Rose wived associates is that when the anarchist ideals fail, they get all vicious eat up. And what ever they built up crumbles to the ground, with a lot of loud cursing.

Zaphod, Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox, figurehead and Worst dressed Sentient Being in the Known Universe for the seventh time, knew he had the “Infinite Improbability Drive” (Chapter Ten - Eleven, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and could pretty much escape any situation in both universes. And as the lamb being led to slaughter,(Pribek) well it was a generally good way for him to think: “Don’t Panic…” …oh, J, by the way, never say that to a young girl.

Say what to a young girl? “Lamb being led to slaughter” or “don’t panic”?

    Hickenlooper Update– from http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,375164,00.html

A jazz singer has shocked some Denver residents after replacing the words of the national anthem with those of the “Black National Anthem” during the annual State of the City address.

Rene Marie was asked to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper delivered the annual address on Tuesday. Instead, she sang the lyrics of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” — a hymn commonly referred to as the “Black National Anthem” — to the tune of the national anthem, MyFOXColorado.com reports.

“If anyone has got a right to be angry it’s probably me,” Hickenlooper told the station. “I guess what I feel most is just deeply disappointed.”

Thank God there wasn’t Widespread Panic!
