Can’t we all just get along?

It is the question that has plagued mankind and we here at the Friday Night Cage Match/Fondue Party/Evolving Conversation/Dancing About Architecture world headquarters come down firmly on the side of no.

But, our opinion hasn’t stopped once-successful bands from reuniting. Nope, seems like you can’t throw a rock these days without hitting some geezer on the way to a gig with the old mates; on the way to living in the pastsville. But, it’s not always bad. Some bands get reunited and it feels so good.

Tonight we bring you the rumored reunion version of the FNCMFPECDAA.

Tonight we have………

The Faces or Phish?

“the Rod Stewart back-up band”-There are at least four phases to the Rod Stewart story as far as I see from here.
    1. When he was a bad ass rock and roll singer that any loud musician would have backed up with pride.
    2. Solo career when he still had some rock in him and even though it was self-serving, some of it was pretty good.
    3. “Do Ya’ Think I’m Sexy”-I pulled the chord to get off at the next stop at this point.
    4. Serial marrying>the great American songbook-don’t really need to say anything about that.

The Faces were a great band and much more than the Rod Stewart back-up band. Anything that Ronnie Lane was involved in is worthy. Best stuff Ron Wood ever did too (although, the current news of Wood running off with an 18-year-old, Russian cocktail waitress has some entertainment value. I’ve always thought of Ron Wood as the Andy Capp of rock and roll). Ian McLagan is great and so is Kenney Jones.

The Faces were a true rhythm section with a front man. More bands should do that.

Phish-Early ’90s, my brother played me a record that turned my head called “Rift”. I noticed that it was produced by Barry Beckett and, I thought “something to keep an eye on here”. Later, I was driving and coincidentally through the area that contains the real estate that was “The Whitewater Land Deal” and the song “Down With Disease” came on the radio adding to the surreality of the moment and, I made a mental note to pay more attention to Phish. Then, I saw some PBS deal or something the band seemed pretty loose. Didn’t sound like the same bunch. So, I pretty much stopped paying attention.

A couple of years ago, I was listening to a post LG, Little Feat record which, I believe was “Chinese Work Songs”. I didn’t much like the album but, I wanted to so, I put it in the car CD changer. One night I was driving and the song “Sample In A Jar” came on. I thought, “what an odd tune” and, listened to it three times before pulling in the drive. “I wonder what that is about, did he say Leemor’s bed?” For a couple of days, I was humming the song in my head. Every time I would get in the car, I would play the track. I kept trying to figure out the lyric and finally gave in to looking it up on the net. That’s when I found out it was a Phish cover so, I thought maybe, I should look more in to Phish but, then they broke up.

The fact that I sought that song out so thoroughly at this jaded juncture speaks well to the writing.

Here is a nice version by Phish.

YouTube is chock full of delightful cover versions of most any song but, I have to say that this version of “Sample In A Jar” by the Fox Lane Guitar Ensemble is the best thing I’ve ever seen on YT. Take it away girls.

Phish has their own Ben&Jerry’s flavor-chocolate ice cream with a caramel-marshmallow swirl and fish shaped chocolate fudge chunks inside. Recently, to celebrate Ben and Jerry’s anniversary, the ingredients have been updated to also include cow shaped chocolate fudge chunks.

All in all, I’m a big fan of the Faces but, I’m not so jazzed about a reunion without Ronnie Lane. I think he was the secret ingredient and ever since I saw Ronnie Van Zant’s hat on the mic. stand, I’ve had a hard time with outward displays of affection for dead band members from live ones getting a payday.

And, I still plan to explore Phish further. It makes more sense for them to reunite because, it’s the original band and they are still in the thick of the prime life stage for music creation. And, it’s something that the fans crave. I know that because there are about 20 Phish related items that show up in the reader on a daily basis.

I just watched the Fox Lane Guitar Ensemble’s “Sample” again. If you take nothing else away from this, you got to check that out.

  6. J wrote,

Fox Lane was great! Did you see the teacher in the red shirt conducting and giving cues? I wonder why teachers of school ensembles of these sorts always feel the need to “conduct”? Why not step out of the picture and let the students do their thing? I doubt that most of the students are paying any attention to him anyway…

J’s last blog post..What’s that on Chet’s thumb?

  7. Pribek wrote,

I agree with you on the conducting, it’s got to be a distraction. But, even though that is an outward manifestation of mid-life crisis or possibly a cry for help, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt for possibly bringing Phish to the table, no?

  8. J wrote,

Yeah…I guess I’d rather see a trained musician than an 18-year old cocktail waitress calling the shots. Ronnie, what would your momma say?

I can’t figure out if the reunion talk started before or after Woody started traipsing around with the 18-year old cocktail waitress. May be that’s why Rod Stewart woke up.

Faces reunion? Really? I doubt it. This has been touted for bloody years with nothing much coming from it. Besides, Plonk left the band ages before it broke up so it wouldn’ really be a problem for it to re unite without him, seeing as he is dead n’ all. That said, this new Ron Wood debacle is a shame. When you have one of the hottest totty’s in show business already, why fuck about with something not much older than a child? The idiot. His faling off the wagon won’t go down very well in Stones circles either. He’s been warned enough times. Rod only wants a ‘quickie’ with the Faces just to restore some credibility before releasing yet another lame solo album that only little old ladies will buy. I love the Faces more than any other band. They are my true number one but I hope to God they dont’ screw it up by re forming now, as wrinked old men with a wicked glint in their eyes. Dear oh dear oh dear. Please don’t let it happen!

    Who is Phish?

See, I’ve hear that too, that word came down from the front office.
I got to think that a binging Ron Wood wouldn’t bode well for a Faces reunion. If the Glimmer Twins are telling you to get off the bottle, it isn’t because they don’t condone drinking, it has to be because,
    A. Your drinking is causing you to blow it on stage and in studio and/or
    B. Your drinking is causing other social behavior that can’t be tolerated.

I don’t know about Ian but, Rod and Kenney have made their lick and they don’t need to enter into a project with an unreliable key guy.

Who is Phish? I’m not an authority and hopefully somebody more familiar with the music will enter the discussion. That being said, they are a Jammy type band, that developed a loyal, Grateful Dead-like following, that broke up a couple of years back.

A while ago, I wandered into finding rips of everything Rod from Handbags and Gladrags to the Songbook stuff. I knew that, after a point, Rod Stewart’s output went from cool stuff to insufferable, occasional outliers like “People Get Ready” with Jeff Beck to the contrary.

What really surprised me was how early that point came. My estimate was 1972.

But that ain’t Rod Stewart we’re talking about. It’s the Faces vs Phish.

I don’t really know the Faces, except that Ron became a Stone and Kenny sat on the Moon seat of the Who until their first breakup. And Ronnie Lane had MS. So I know the members but I don’t know the music as well as I might.

Phish, them I kinda know. In college, a friend tried to push Hoist (?) on me. I later bought A Live One and Junta. Fundamentally, they had a great sense of humor and great musical skills. They studied barbershop quartet to work up their vocal chops, using them for good purpose on occasion. They could jump genres on a dime, and they’ve made great, fun songs out of such limited themes as repeating “David Bowie” and “UB40″ over and over again. The song about the author of the Helping Friendly Book is awesome. The guitarist recorded a free jazz album, which cluttered the shelves of the local used record stores due to all the Phisheads who weren’t ready to follow in that step.

So, while I have respect for the Faces, I gotta go Phish.

Hey that’s a pretty darn good “Star Spangled Banner” there. I’ve heard a lot of bands do a barbershop kind of treatment and most of ‘em sound pretty silly. Phish jumps in there and gets it.
