From Science Daily.
Hearing loss may be more prevalent in American adults than previously reported, according to a study in the July 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Hearing impairment is known to be highly common and is considered to be a societal problem. Although national estimates of hearing loss are lacking, the incidence of this condition in the U.S. is predicted to have risen significantly because of the aging population and growing use of personal listening devices.
You hear that? I said….. DO YOU HEAR THAT!!??
Can you believe people are willing to suffer hearing loss because of these damn things.

That’s right, the culprits are those earbuds. And, I’m going to tell you that there has never been a more cruel joke played on the public than these things. They are uncomfortable, they sound crappy and destroy your hearing.
Back in the day, we listened to music on big ass hi-fi speakers like this Wharfedale.
Personally, I like to use a set of studio monitors like a pair of Tannoys if I’m listening on a good stereo. That’s because they have a flat response and they don’t artificially enhance the bass end on records that already have superfluous amounts of sub harmonic jive going on and they are great for analyzing how a mix is constructed.
But, I bet if you went to your local pawn shop or, stopped by a yard sale you could pick up a set of vintage, heavyweight stereo speakers for next to nothing. You’d be surprised how much better music sounds through speakers that are moving some air than those damn earbuds.
Earbuds…can you believe that?

I am guilty of having one set of these hanging on around my neck as I write this :-) They are comfortable on my laptop, easy to carry around also.

They are bad Ovidiu. Headphones are bad but earbuds are worse because people use them so much as they are so convenient.

They don’t fit my ears, so I don’t wear ‘em much. I have a wrap-around-your-ears set of headphones that I have for the office.
If people are mobile, big speakers just aren’t as convenient these days. It’s weird, I know.

I don’t use ‘em and I used openbacked headphones in the studio. It’s funny though; I remember researching their safety issues prior to last November and the conclusion at that time is that they were as safe as headphones. Gotta take those ear breaks!

I don’t doubt that they are as safe as headphones but, I think people use them differently, longer periods, more often.
Good point about openbacked headphones too, by the way. The close backed, over the ear phones are the worst thing you can do for your ears.

What do Wikkipedia, earbuds, Lil Wayne and Olympic Gold have in common? Sponsorship, mofo, sponsorship!!
This probably sounds like sour grapes, and well, Mike Phelps — according to something I read early this AM [at work] — reports he receives $1 million sponsorships up to $4 million. Now that puts a price on our topic discussions… no?
I type or say earbuds, or Obama, or Mike Phelps, …. cha-ching… that’ll be a dollar fitty.
So, Maestro, I’ll give you $1 million to wear these ear buds on international TV… enter the Ubiquity Threat!!
