Charlie Hunter is… a Dirty, Funky, Soulful, Tasteful, Harmonically Evolved, Guitarist and Composer.
He has an elegant sense of melody and structure whether he’s improvising or playing a part. He does all of it while playing the bass parts simultaneously on his 7 string. It’s not just in the name of technique. It’s not a parlor trick. It’s intensely musical.
If you haven’t heard him you need to. If you have heard him you know. Either way, you should go to AAJ, where they have a link to a free stream of his soon-to-be released record, “Baboon Strength”. You will need to copy the password info that AAJ provides.

Have you seen the Novax Charlie Hunter 8 string? Very odd looking guitar!

Interesting Jon, those fanned frets are trippy but, they make perfect sense for intonation. Hunh..$3,300, I’m guessing that’s cheaper than a Kiefer Sutherland Gibson and you get two bonus strings!

I have an album from way back, I think Ready Set Shango, with a very Coltrane cover of “Come As You Are” by Nirvana. He’s a monster player.

I remember seeing George Van Eps playing 7 string on like the Mike Douglas show and things of that nature. He was great a, master. And, I’ve listened to a lot of jazz guys doing bass lines against chords/melodies. Joe Pass, Jim Hall guys like that, Johnny Smith, Wes.
A lot of the players that followed those guys, either sound derivative
or gimmicky (tone wise-effects that take away from the personality). Hunter has always sounded like unique to my ears.

When I hear artists play like that, I think that must be what Stephen Hawkings brain sounds like: “From the Big Bang to black holes, from dark matter to a possible Big Crunch,..”
