Here’s a fun one for a Friday. Bill Kirchen was a member of Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen and was the guy who played the famous lick on their version of “Hot Rod Lincoln”. Kirchen plays the song at his gigs and finds ways to incorporate an impossible number of other famous guitar licks as well as various familiar themes and fun noises in to the arrangement.
Tele guys ought to take note of a deceptively simple technique the Bill has mastered. On a Tele, you can achieve some mega-pure twang by playing with your pick as close to the bridge as you can get it. It works especially well on low notes. It’s trickier than it looks but very effective. Works real well for studio stuff too.
As always…hit pause on the music player before playing the YouTube.
