Some of you are old enough to remember this…
Back in the dirty, early 80s, I was renting a room from a guy that was buying a house. So, we were roommates. He was a few years older than me. This was at a time when the first timeshare joints came to the Ozarks and we we’re both on the sales bandwagon. It’s kind of hard to fathom but, we were rolling in dough. I made more money, for a short period of time at 19-20 years old, than I ever have since.
We had this big, brand new house on the lake and disposable cash so, this place was like the instant quintessential bachelor pad. There were a lot of parties, people over all the time.
Anyway, this roommate had a framed copy of the “Poverty Sucks” poster and he was real proud of it so, it was prominently displayed in the spacious, party ground zero, living area. It was the only piece of “artwork” on any of the walls. It was like a conversation piece. That sounds weird now.
Now, most of the people that came to party were in the same get the money and run frame of mind. The phrase “yuppies” was being thrown around quite a bit in those days but, these folks weren’t yuppies. They may have looked yuppieish. I mean, Members Only jackets and leased Corvettes, a lot of fake Rolexes. Mostly, they were hustlers, and looking legit was the front. A lot of dope dealers and people involved in various scams; legal or illegal, didn’t really matter.
So, usually during the evening, somebody, one of these miscreants, would point out this “Poverty Sucks” poster and everybody would get a big hoot out of it. One time though, there was this girl who was truly offended and she was vocal about it. She ended up storming out of there (with all of her friends) after being subject to some ridicule. It’s no big deal but, it was one of those clarifying moments. I just remember thinking; “You guys are nuts and she’s right, you bastards are a batch of losers and she’s sane”. Like that.
That whole scene played in my mind this morning after I saw this video of
P Diddy/Puff/Daddy/Diddy%&(^%*, whatever the hell his name is, whining about gas prices because he now has to forgo his private jet and fly commercial because, he needs to head out to Hollywood regularly to pursue his “acting career”. Take a look.
And remember…hit pause on the music player before playing the YouTube.
There may even be some “tongue in cheek” or attempt at sarcastic wit here but, if so, it’s not working. He really just comes off as a doughhead.
