Hunh? “Rock and Roll Cage Match”?

That’s right, “Rock and Roll Cage Match”.

What’s it about?

In Rock and Roll Cage Match, today’s leading cultural critics, humorists, music journalists, and musicians themselves take sides in thirty of the all-time juiciest “who’s better” musical disputes.

Hey wait a minute! That’s sounds pretty familiar. Actually it sounds a lot like our very own Friday Night Cage Match/Fondue Party/Evolving Conversation/Dancing About Architecture. Except, it sounds more lame, kind of dumbed down. Let’s see what they got going on here.

Marc Spitz on the Smiths vs. the Cure: “If the Smiths are its James Dean, the Cure are the Marlon Brando of modern rock.”

Well, I can assure you that none of the regulars ever whipped out a Cure/Brando reference at a FNCMFPECDAA. That wouldn’t go over I’m sure.

What else?

Touré on Michael Jackson vs. Prince: “[Prince] was the wild son of Jimi, the younger brother of Rick James and Richard Pryor, the ultrasexual black Casanova who told you up front that he had a dirty mind . . . Michael held the opposite appeal. His music was often about escaping through dance or being hopeful about the world, and he came across as super-innocent.”

Michael Jackson or Prince? C’mon, that’s like taking the gimme-the duck; too obvious. I’d like to see what Touré has to say about Black Sabbath or The Dixie Chicks, something that requires a little creative thought.

Touré, what is it you are trying to say there, hmmmm…? Maybe, something like this; “Prince is a talented slut while, Michael Jackson is a talented pedophile”. Ultrasexual Casanova!!??, give me a bucket.

Well, they say imitation is a form of flattery. I guess.

Now this could be an interesting twist on a certain popular video game; Rock Band Cage Match - The Video Game! You choose the opponents and thrash your favorite band to the top of the charts. Requires 2 or more players. Batteries not included. Examples; -The Clash vs. The Cure. Judas Priest vs. Iron Maiden. Dixie Chicks vs. the Judds.

So Jack, if you wrote a page a day, in a year you’d have a book ready for the publisher (kudos to PD).

The Smiths as James Dean only works because of Morrissey’s love of Dean. In one of their last videos, he went to James Dean’s grave, if I recall. One would think that the James Dean quality is that it died young and full of promise and the Marlon Brando quality is that it failed to grow old gracefully. The Smiths had enough albums that they fulfilled their promise. I can’t think of a real James Dean of that crew. And there’s enough whimsy in the Cure (”Love Cats”, anyone?) that I fail to see a connection to great brooding Brando.

But REM is clearly the Eagles of Modern Rock.
