This group called ACORN is in the news a lot today. Here in Missouri, McCain is showing a slight lead in the polls. This is from Yahoo News.
Charlene Davis, co-director of the election board in Jackson County, where Kansas City is, said the fraudulent registration forms came from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN. She said they were bogging down work Wednesday, the final day Missourians could register to vote.
“I don’t even know the entire scope of it because registrations are coming in so heavy,” Davis said. “We have identified about 100 duplicates, and probably 280 addresses that don’t exist, people who have driver’s license numbers that won’t verify or Social Security numbers that won’t verify. Some have no address at all.”
Years ago, I remember hearing that there was a group in Springfield that was picking up drunks off of the street and taking them to register. I saw a van stop to pick up some guys that were huddled under an overpass. A couple of hours later, I saw the same guys waiting for the bus outside of the Cat and Fiddle Lounge which was a notorious, happy hour at 10:00 A.M., sort of bar. The guys all looked pretty happy.

ACORN. They’re such an effective organization. In Marion County, Indiana, AKA Indianapolis, the place I work, 105% of the adult population is registered to vote. Can’t wait to hear about the voter turnout.

105%, that is effective. If only half of those show up it will be a stellar turnout.

Do you think MO will vote Democrat this year? Given their track record for predicting the outcome of the last X number of presidential elections I’m curious to know what the Zeitgeist is there right now (and if there’s any schadenfreude floating around, of course)
I can’t imagine any of my “Show Me State” relatives voting for the Democrats, but I’m curious about the rest of the folk there. My in-laws (bless ‘em) tend to vote based on popular opinion… never doubt the power of the media!

Rock the Vote: Online Voter RE-RE-RE-registration
It doesn’t appear that I could register online for MO or TX… after October 4th, hmmmm. Must register 30 days before the day to vote. MO took my email though, and promises to “keep me in the loop…”

Today’s larcenous google subjects:
Does anyone remember the scandalous Poll Tax back around ‘60 through ‘65?
Did you also know that JFK did not start the space race with Russia… it was Ike working behind the scenes long before upstart John?
Okay stick a fork in me, or flip me over — I’m done for the week.

I’m sure all of this has serious political implications but I’m intrigued about the ” Cat and Fiddle.” I think I’ve been there….or was it the ” Over the Moon?”
I was talking about poll tax with a retired Houston cop just the other day. In the 50’s it was more important than a social security card.

Dave,
Wasn’t that the Cat Ballou? What was that place that you, Roy and Susan used to go? You used to talk about things as a teenager when I was just a wee one… but I free associated even back then. Poll Tax was related to Pole Cats in my mind.. and a dead pole cat in the middle of the road on a late night excursion in the Chevy four door with Dad driving… windows down as it was before A/C; “Whew, that smell is from the outside… skunk.”
My entire political beginnings can be described with these keywords: Korean War Veterans as Scout Masters and Coaches, Poll Tax, Pole Cats, my little dog ‘Baby’, ant hills in our yard, and performing for the evening PTA meetings.
I guess ACORN is the nut that the old PTA’s dropped; like us, nuts don’t fall far from the trees. Thanks brudder for dragging out the old in me, once again.

Kenski-I’ve always thought that one reason Missouri has been adept as a barometer is that there are roughly equal portions of urban and rural voters. St. Lou and KC are traditionally have a large number of Union member Dems and the rural areas (which would include the Springfield are even though it is on the way to being the new Cleveland) are more GOP>So, one usually has a slight edge depending on the amount of ruckus that is a good gauge of the larger picture.
The Cat and Fiddle Lounge-Not sure iof it’s still there, I’ll check. A groovy ’50s looking cocktail lounge located in the same area as the old Tower Theater. Which, if I have my mind straight, is also right by where they filmed the Ozarks Jubilee Show. I always imagined it as the go to bar for those musicians. When you walked in, there was a little sign that said; “A Serious Drinking Establishment’ and, it was the place for a manly portion. Happy Hour was 10:00-1:00 so, it was also ideal for taking off the edge.
