Sans throws the first curve ball of the evening. My first pick was Deborah Frost, ’cause she commented here a few days back and had a cool band, too. But after much reflection, I’m gonna say Jennifer Batten, ’cause she’s got that post-Zappaesque knack for bending the rules.
This drummer loves some good time sassy female musicianship, regardless of the instrument. I do enjoy the alannah myles debut cd, reminds me of raitt. Love that attitude. So I gotta vote raitt,Haven’t had the time to check out deborah, but I will take a listen soon.
Batten? With the choices, I thought that there was an implicit blues association, which Jennifer just doesn’t have. If that’s not part, I might (without changing the vote) bring up Lori Linstruth.
Just went to the the YouTube vid for the damper. I think that the Greg Howe color-coordinated scrunchy is a cool idea, but if I had a shred guitar, I’d think about that. And you know what? If I was playing slide in a band context, I might want one, too.
Batten’s latest album is called Whatever, and there was a link saying “Return to Batten.com” link near it. I saw it out of the corner of my eye as Return to Whatever, which is a great concept for a slacker fusion album.
Pribek’s probably thinkin’- “All I said was Bonnie Raitt or Susan Tedeschi?”
In the late 70’s when everyone was falling over for Ronstadt (a great singer in her own right), I was the one saying, “What about Bonnie Raitt?!” “River of Tears” from ’82’s Green Light album has everything, including the Stonesiest guitar groove you can get without Keef. I can fall over and never hit the floor when that song plays. A soul mate of Lowell George -both born in Burbank, with similar slide phrasing- Bonnie is my #1 Strat-o-Sister.
Susan Tedeschi is awesome and still evolving. Her earlier stuff has more Janice, and currently she cops Bonnie pretty hard, and although I’m still waiting to hear more Susan, I know she’s serious and means bidness. I love the more recent call and response stuff she does with hubby Derek on slide. A whole lotta talent in that marriage!
Keep your eyes & ears on semi-newbies Shannon Curfman and Joanne Shaw Taylor!
Like Dave, I’m a big Rory Block fan. That gal can flat go after Robert Johnson– Canadian girl too. Another kinda obscure Canadian chick is Ellen McIlwaine. Ellen’s been around a long time, but she’s way too eclectic– cool slide player though who can go from Blues to Latin to India in a few measures.
The toughest gal in the business is probably Ani Di Franco. Anyone who knows her bio will probably agree. Wraps her picking hand, fake nailed fingertips in electrical tape and wails churnin, burnin’ funk on an Alvarez that’s twice her size. She uses almost as many tunings and metaphors as Joni Mitchell, and pulls no punches.

All of the mentioned artists are fantastic! But, I’m going with Madge… Back around March 2008 — in an interview Madge says:
“We live very comfortable lives, and unfortunately, we have to have our noses rubbed in other people’s pain and suffering to realize how much we have and how much we have to be grateful for.” (SOURCE HERE)
Mrs. Ciccone is scheduled to be inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday night at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria. She will be inducted by none other than her friend Justin Timberlake.
There has been quite a lot of controversy around whether Madonna deserves to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame since her roots sit firmly in the land of pop but Jim Henke, vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, said that “To me, it’s the same issue as last year with Grandmaster Flash and ‘does hip-hop belong in?’
“I think here at the museum and among other inductees, we’ve always defined rock and roll pretty broadly. It’s not just about four guys with guitars or something like that. Madonna certainly had a huge impact on popular music and rock and roll throughout the ’80s and ’90s and she’s certainly deserving of being honored.” Amen! Congrats… (ibid)
Ms. Madge has done everything else, she is the Italian Jewish American been-on-the-ropes, converted-and-Jilted a bunch of times, Older Adoptive Mother Natural Birth Woman Much Loved Father Hatin’ then Lovin’ Blues Driven Mother of Jesus … in other words all the stuff Blues is made of… no? Madge’s life is what all these others write songs about. I refer to Carole King’s Natural Woman, and Dylan’s Just Like a Woman for the prophecy that Modonna would come along…
Dr Jam[b]
Just throw me a fish… However, I prophesy Madge will one day “convert” to Delta Blues Singer and become Black Mama performing down on Bourbon Street, mark it in your journals, you heard it first right here.
Hey, where is Pribek? Did he just pack his rig and put on his new hat and go? Well, he was always telling me about the refuge of the road… how that sort of appeals to him.
Having never listened to either of their actual album releases…
Susan.
Seen her live, encoring with the Derek Trucks band and sitting in with the Allmans. She has a lot of charisma and managed to really lift two already stellar shows.
Um…
I have listened to some Bonnie, but as a whole, she bores me.
I have listened to less Susan Tedeschi, but I’ve listened to her first album all the way through, and decided not to rip it.
I’d say Rory Block, but don’t really know her work well enough to do so.
So, I vote for Sister Rosetta Tharpe, rockin’ an SG like a sanctified Angus Young.

And she’s making guitar accessories now. I bet she can change the oil in her car, too.

Deborah, you still rock very hard and I’ll vote for you next time.

Lori Linstruth; very, very cool. Thanks for the link!

But for now, I still pick Bonnie over Susan. For now.
Don’t ask me what happened there!
I bought Shannon’s CD on about eight years ago. I haven’t given it a spin in a few years, but it is good stuff.
What happened there Stratoblogster?

Final Answer: Madge
Man, PD. Talk about thinking outside the box…
