There is a fascinating movie called “The Universal Mind Of Bill Evans”. In the movie, Evans sits and talks music with his brother Harry, himself a musician and music educator. The discussion is at a very high level and delves in to improvisation, specifically how to develop that skill and is liberally peppered with philosophy. Heavy stuff.

This clip was extracted from the film.

As always, lay off of the sustain pedal when comping and press pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.

I made myself a mental note to check out what else that guy had up and now I will for sure. I realize that film isn’t going to be for everybody but, Evans is constantly thoughtful and thought provoking. You don’t see stuff like that much anymore.
