My friend Noah sent me this version of Freddie King doing “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” this morning.

A few things came to mind while watching this; first Freddie is just bad. His phrasing is so solid. You know this is another case where the timing is part of the tone. Also, what a soulful singer! Freddie, if he never played a lick on the guitar, would have made it as a singer. You don’t really hear a lot of people talking about Freddie’s vocals; odd.

Another important thing to look at here is, how the guys are comping behind Freddie. That’s the real trick to really pulling off a slow blues and a lot of players just don’t get it. These guys here are listening to Freddie, playing creative stuff that’s unobtrusive and allowing Freddie to soar. All of them are. I don’t know who the other guitarist, in the gold lame suit is but, he’s real clever. He even busts out the wah-wh and it adds to the performance.

As always, first realize that there’s something deep inside of you that won’t let you wreck your best friend’s home then, hit pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.

    Wunnerful, jus’ wunnerful!

  3. Beware: the leaven of man. He just might play and sing for you, till you can breathe no more.

“Yes” my answer to Freddie… and I completely get what you are talking about the suspended animation of the brothers comping his phrases… good old fashion fun.

I’m glad you guys liked that. This is cool too because, I don’t know that my young friend would have ever come across this if not for the old YouTube. It gives me some optimism about the technology.

  5. Yes Sirree, one shout out to Noah. Very nice to share this with you on my families perfect Sunday.
