Gil Evans was a pianist, composer and arranger. I think he is probably best known for his work with Miles Davis. He also recorded with Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Cannonball Adderly and singers Pearl Bailey and Johnny Mathis. I have read that there was a project in the works to team Evans up with Jimi Hendrix.
Evans did release an album of Jimi’s songs in 1974. This clip of “Voodoo Chile” is from a Warsaw concert in 1976 and features Bob Stewart on tuba. A very interesting way to view Hendrix’ music from a different angle.
As always, pick up all the pieces and make an island then click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.
I had this friend way back who was talking to me about Hendrix. I could tell he had not really been listening so much because he kept talking about ‘Voodoo Chile’ but pronouncing ‘Chile” like the name of the country. So, it sounded like he was saying “Voodoo Chili”. I always thought that was a good marketing idea-Voodoo Chili.

Looks like someone already thought of the Voodoo Chile branding:

That tubist has some chops! Good control in the high range!
he he… Sweat and Spice it says…
As I listen to my brother from another mother play that euphonium I get a gut feeling there are notes there that the human ear cannot hear. So I set up a cup of water next to my sub-woofer, and tried it again… yep the water boiled up like an male alligator singing to his target Sally-gator. HERE and HERE …I think I even caught a glimpse of Brooke Shields with a wig hat on, in there hittin’ a cow bell.. I miss stage bands like crazy — this reminds me of the Carson days of Late Show with Doc’s Band.
At one point I feel like Jimi might have really meant a 2\2 Sousa military march through a swamp with this composition… interesting. Airborne VooDoo Chitlin’s
Swamps, Sweat, euphonium, Spice… and chilling primal subsonics… with elephantine bellows; yep that is Voodoo Chile. I have awakened yet again to another revelation to the Jimi Hendrix experience.
Damn good, thanks young guns… I appreciate it very much.
pd-in-full: Pat. Pend.
more Brooke Shields!
tubist-that’s a funny word. Maybe not as funny as flautist but, pretty funny to a hairy legged guitar player.
So, somebody got to my idea first.Oh well, how ’bout this one for a pizza joint –Pizza Chance
There’s a live Taj Mahal release of a performance in Germany with a Tuba guy named Howard Johnson who’s really good.
Here’s something really cool I found on the YT:

I agree, Strat. I wonder if any of the mud cats in here have played at VFW Halls? We used to go to Dime Box VFW Hall on Friday night and sit and dance to the “oompah” bands. They never *[never ever]* sounded like this as you can imagine. These are live variations on themes, very cool. This one is going into my favorites/Share/Facebook folder at youTube. You have set me on a whole new course this morning.

Jack: everyone will eventually get to your ideas first since you are the poster child for reluctant self-promotion… and I’d rather be a lard arsed lineman, than an incarcerated Glory Boy, any day. So, there. As a matter of fact, somebody already ate your Pizza…
Dr J is right about you: you need a hat.
A friend burned that recording to CD for me. The whole album. It is a glorious thing to be hold.
liner note flashback…
wasn’t Howard Johnson one of the Toussaint crew on Rock Of Ages?
Glory Boy!!??
Running backs… like OJ… glory boys.. no?
