Dec 302008

Each year, Lake Superior State University on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula publishes a “List of Words to Be Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness”. From the Canadian Press, here is this year’s list…

-green

-carbon footprint or carbon offsetting

-maverick

-first dude

-bailout

-Wall Street/Main Street

-monkey

-icon or iconic

-game changer

-staycation

-desperate search

-not so much

-winner of five nominations

-it’s that time of year again

Interesting that last month we were talking about how Merriam-Webster chose “bailout” as the “Word of the Year”.

I know I’m out of the loop but, I’ve never heard anyone utter “first dude” or “staycation”.

I got no problem with monkey. We should keep that.
