Coltrane-I&#039;m real sure that Trane was aware of and studied 12 tone music, and Schönberg. When I think about how he did what he did, I think about Miles telling him &quot;You can&#039;t play everything&quot; and Trane replying; &quot;Why not?&quot;
Trane manipulated harmonic structure with ease; effortlessly. Was there a thought process? Was he playing &quot;licks&quot;? Or, was it genuine stream of consciousness, real time soul speak?
I am convinced that at some point, he broke all of it down, in a number of ways.
All of these things are devices to find jumping off points.</description>

First thing that came to mind was the whole &quot;sheets of sound&quot; thing that Coltrane was into. Not the same technique, but a cerebral musical approach.</description>
