One of the best things I’ve ever heard is “I’m Coming Virginia” by Bix Beiderbecke. Recorded in 1927! There is an MP3 link and some background at NPR.
I think it’s Eddie Lang on guitar; superb. If there are any Bixheads out there, let me know if I’m wrong about Lang.

Pribek,
Great stuff…
Nice catch, Maestro. Bix Biederbecke — if he isn’t playing at the second coming I will be surprised. My first music teacher was David Corder, in elementary school. Back then he was Coronet-ist with HSO. He played the Bix B style… it was the only way to play according to him. And he is truly a great musician, turned out thousands of us as he traveled around the HISD schools teaching and spreading the love of instruments that require hand-eye-mouth-soul coordination… and some were exceptional, like Corder via Bix.
He even played Bix recordings for us as we prepared songs for PTA nights, and at old folks homes at Christmas. Bix Biederbecke: Piercing clear tones and no hesitation, sublime. Your report link from ’05 is dead on. We should be playing Bix music in chrches, inaugurations, schools, and radio and all over this land.
Thanks guys, Bix is tremendous and it’s just a remarkable recording.
