Friday Night Cage Match/Fondue Party/Evolving Conversation/Dancing About Architecture Vol. 46

Way way back, I heard about this mythical recording session at Motown that had this line up.

Jeff Beck
James Jamerson
Cozy Powell

Good Golly! The Power Trio Of Doom right there!
One of those deals that was rumored but, the tapes never surfaced, you know?
Well recently, I found out that the session really did happen, at Motown but….
1. It wasn’t a trio, other Funk Brothers were in on the deal and
2. Jamerson wasn’t the bass player, it was actually my old pal Bob Babbitt, which is still way happening, trust me. Take a look at Bob’s story, it will surprise and interest you.

But, I still love the idea of the mythical power trio.

You know about fantasy baseball and football where stat geeks draft their own make believe “team” from the player pool? That’s kind of like what we are going to do on the ol’ FNCMFPECDAA this eve.

The player pool is every player ever. And the game is…

Fantasy Power Trio?

Now, traditionally the power trio would consist of guitar, bass and drums but, we are not bound by tradition. And, if you want to bend the non-rules and throw in a front man, that’s fine. After all, a lot of great bands, who I won’t name, are really just power trios with hood ornaments.

Have fun wid’ it.

  1. But, I still love the idea of the mythical power trio.

    Rules: All living and posthumous?
Plus — Is this a double elimination, or a Cut-throat like Hi-Lo pool? Like, if we pick same members in different combination’s, do we have a cage match to determine who gets the player? Just anticipating another breakaway FNCMFPECDAA game on Super Bowl XLIII Eve that promises snoredom, since one of the teams is supposed to win by sixteen touchdowns…

In my experience, trio’s that tread water best are three players who blend, and three who know the value of being an Indian at times, but can step up and be a Chief when necessary.

I’m going to therefore anticipate trouble, and draw five and end up discarding two…. OK? Ante up everyone? Guts to open, deuces wild…

  2. Hrm…

Pete Townshend / John Entwistle / Keith Moon ?
Eric Clapton / Jack Bruce / Ginger Baker ?
Eddie Van Halen / Michael Anthony / Alex Van Halen ?
Stevie Ray Vaughn / Tommy Shannon / Chris Layton ?
Kind of obvious, but good ones.

Pat Metheny / Jaco Pastorius / ??? I don’t really know Bob Moses otherwise
Steve Vai / Billy Sheehan / Greg Bissonette ??? The drummer was good, but not up to the level of the other two.

John Coltrane / Jimmy Garrison / Elvin Jones ??? Still need McCoy Tyner in there, don’t you?

I’m flashing back to the Pro Bowl in 1981. Roger Staubach throwing to Ahmad Rashad. Throwing about a yard above his head. If it was Fran Tarkington, it would go right to Rashad. If Roger was throwing to Drew Pearson, he’d have got there. The best are the best because they know and cover each other’s weaknesses, bring up their strengths. Throw three musicians in a room, they’ll trip over themselves until they feel it out, even if they are Sheehan, Vai and Colaiuta.

But I’ll say them, just to have a list.

  3. Ever hear Vital Techtones? Steve Smith, Scott Henderson & Victor Wooten. I didn’t have to make that one up– it really happened.

Uhmm, so now I gotta think… Thinking make head hurt.

Stewart Copeland, Eric Johnson & Pino Palladino

Definitely not hood ornament material here– Paul Rogers should be singing for Trower.

I have to sleep now. Great FNCMFPECDAA, I just came in too late…

  4. Pribek says:

    Albert Lee
    Duck Dunn
    Tony Williams

  5. Should be interesting! See HERE. Spicy, Baby.

I grabbed this at Ovidiu’s site… you all have been called out… simultaneous to this fncmfpecdaa… I’m not callin’ you all Chicken, but… well, I think the Fantasy Trio will certainly emerge from this pick seven… yeah, let the bloody noses start to flow…

Let’s see, people I [Ovidiu] tag are:

  6. I’m tempted to call this Ovidiu challenge Seven Card Stud… but we’ll see, right?

  7. Oho, interesting game, I’ve played such games before. Unfortunately you’ve got me this time, I can’t make up my mind. I think last time I have played such a game I made up my mind faster. This time I can’t.

However, I will break a bit the rules and I will put here not the dream team but an interesting team I would like to hear once in a project. It’s rock, and it’s not a trio, it has a front man. But, let’s go.

I’ve been a long time fan of Helloween and then Gamma ray, I’ve followed Kai Hansen, seeing him behind the lead guitar in Helloween, putting up a 5 stars rock band, and then in Gamma ray, making the most intense and wild records I’ve seen. So, I’d put Kai Hansen as the guitar player.

As bass player, well, I’d throw in Stu Hamm. Period.

As drummer, well, I’d go for the drummer of Gamma Ray, Mathias Burchard. I didn’t know his name, actually, but his style on Gamma Ray’s albums thrilled me, wild drums, for real, so, he’s got the job. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk_GTH_cZGU

Now we have already a trio, since Kai Hansen is also one of the most visible and acclaimed metal lead singers. But because it’s my dream, I’d put in there and switch, to see what it gets out of it: Michael Kiske (ex Helloween. Hansen and Kiske, well, it goes back to old Helloween, so we need a change, so let’s see further), Eric Adams, Manowar and Mike Matijevic (Steelheart). Yeah. That’s my dream project. Rock version. Now, I’ll go to give these guys a phone call, to see if they would like to jump in. Hmm…

  8. Pribek says:

never heard Gamma Ray before, those cats are brutal. I could definitely see Stu Hamm doing interesting things in that sort of machine.

  9. Pribek says:

    Bruce Springsteen
    Sting
    Gary Busey

He attended three different colleges before finally graduating in 1963, the year he became a professional drummer with the rock group The Rubber Band. Later, he billed himself as Teddy Jack Eddy and played percussion for Leon Russell, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson.

  10. I’m putting a centavo down on Gamma Ray, Raymond and Ovid, just watched this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWUEunFq3Bc

…and yes it does bring on the good juices of Rock and Shred. Anyone from the group, one centavo.

  11. Pribek says:

    Sonny Landreth
    Charles Mingus
    Max Roach

  12. Pribek says:

    Jimmy Smith
    Charlie Hunter
    Steve Gadd

    more rocking
    Steve Morse
    Larry Graham
    Bonzo

  13. Bruce Springsteen
    Sting
    Gary Busey
    What? …three primadonas?

    no bet. I’ll check, take a pass…

  14. Pribek says:

if they never played a lick, the press conference would be legendary

  15. okay, maybe true, your geniusness: but… this one would scream –

    Rollo [in RR boots]
    Ron Roskowske
    Bill the Hat

    handled by…. hmmmm …..YOU.

  16. You and I both know how this is going to go down for Power Triiio Fantasy Game…. you will get the last word… I’m trying to catch up — googling all these names —

anything I say back is like throwing pine cones at a gorilla…

    so I tell you what:
    Skidmore
    Owings
    Merrill

too easy, but good luck wid’ it..

  17. Besides, I have the winning “tre bien” three card shuffle “coupe d’ gras” in my hand right now… and I am just waiting to throw them down. So give it your best shot… pile up your chips all you can, the more the better ’cause I will be taking them home in my pocket at midnight cash out.

Don’t be worried, just play on. We only need wind and a tube, let’s see:

    Di Paolo
    Soleri
    Casalis

  18. Pribek says:

    pretty funky that:
    how ’bout
    Johnny “Guitar” Watson
    Bootsy
    Earl Palmer

  19. Pribek says:

    pretty folky
    Gordon Lightfoot
    Dick Smothers
    Dallas Taylor

  20. Pribek says:

    Bonnie Raitt
    Carol Kaye
    Sheila E

  21. I’m thinking maybe a nap…

  22. Bill Monroe
    Lester Flatt
    Earl Scruggs

  23. All very comforting trios… and worthy hands to play, but the river speaks…
Considering: stimulus bill, lay offs, cash flow, political effluence of sewage, major buckling economies worldwide… and Super Bowl XLIII proximity to this cage match I submit the only possible power triiio fantasy that could fit today — Shuffliiin Crew

    Walter ‘Sweetness’ Payton,
    da’ ‘Fridge, and the
    ‘Punky QB’ Jim McMahon

    top that! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJNC3dgreaU

  24. For PD: Nice song, Last before the storm ;-)

For Jack: Listen the whole album Insanity and Genius, I had the impression of a metal version of Queen on some songs, try it, it should be an interesting variation, I guess. Try Insanity and genius because I find that album to be of a great quality, good songs, great voice.

  25. I can’t help myself, I will point you to this video, where the guy also sings, Kai Hansen, Jack you said you’ve never listened them before. That’s how they sound with the guitar player singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBTUzvzqVvo

  26. Is that all minor key sig’s? I realize saying “I Like” Gamma Ray is way silly… but it is reminiscent of some music past, and that seems to peak my interest, in a never ending cycle of “mind wander.”

It is like Jethro Tull (1979ish — Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evan, Barriemore Barlow, John Glascock, David Palmer) in double speed… no? There is a good hand in Gamma Ray, worth following. One time someone said, “You don’t have to be perfect up there; you just have to mean it.” [is that a Roskowske-ism?]

Gamma has the edge in being very good at this orchestration they are doing, while convincing me they mean it. That means they have put in the hours of hard work in the lab. We all know how that goes.

  27. Pribek says:

    Jethro Tull @ double speed-heh, heh…
Actually, there is some salt to that in that, Tull was a band that used a lot of European style (classical) type voice leading/harmony in chord progressions even melodic ideas. Metalwise I think of Iron Maiden as dabbling along those lines. But, I always heard some Thin Lizzy in maiden’s guitar arranging.
I listened very cursory to Insanity and Genius and noticed a few of the Lizzy type things bubbling up (intro to “No Return”) for instance.
Vocally, it seems that maybe Dio started a trend among metal singers as far as an operatic type of vibrato (Dickonson is another one). It makes sense if you are using those types of chord movements in a heavy, loud way. A blues/gospel vibrato is out of place there and the operatic thing cuts through the barrage.
For me, that type of vibrato is an acquired taste. I found it off putting when I first started hearing it in rock music. I get along with it better after hearing it for a few cycles now.
The regular singer in Gamma Ray employs this quite a bit. Kai has a touch of it but, maybe a little less refined and connects with me a little bit better actually (once again on very brief listening).
Ovidiu, Have you ever heard of the NY based band Riot?
I thought that those guys had some accomplished musical ideas in the metal context. Came from some different angles, even covered Al DiMeola’s “Race With The Devil on a Spanish Highway” which takes some guts.
The Heavy Metal Queen thing reminded me of a band from Texas called Dangerous Toys. They were maybe more in the post GnR glam metal type basket but they did a record with Roy Thom Baker who produced the classic Queen albums. I think Roy Thom envisioned an more metallic Queen at the time.
