When I saw this new Gibson “Eye” model…

…I said to myself; “Hmmm, that’s a little unsettling for some reason”. But, I don’t put a whole lot of stock in to my initial reactions after all I’m the one toting a Wallpaper Tele around. So, tell me more Gibson…

Gibson has long been known for its pioneering guitar designs, and all have set their own standards in guitar innovation. Now, Gibson USA is proud to continue the tradition by adding to the legacy – introducing the new 2009 Limited Run Series Eye Guitar, available beginning April 1 in a strictly limited number of only 350 guitars. This stunning new design features an ultra-pointy, offset double-cutaway body dressed in a nitrocellulose lacquer Fired Engine Red finish that’s matched on the headstock. Powder-coated pickup covers echo the theme. The swooping, symmetrical pickguard is totally original and unique, while the jet-black ebony fingerboard — without position markers — adds a touch of elegance and simplicity.

Hmmm…you know, maybe it’s just not my cup of meat. So, I looked at the “players comments” there on the Gibson page and most weren’t to favorable. For example, Tim says…

Hey, Gibson, are you trying to out-do yourselves here? First, the Reverse V, then the Reverse Explorer, then the Holy V and Holy Explorer, and now this? This “Eye” thing, hands-down, is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen (even more-so than the Pontiac Aztec). It’s not “retro;” it’s not “futuristic;” it’s just plain ugly. Gibson has made some of the most beautiful instruments ever created – the Les Paul, the SJ-200, the Lloyd Loar Mandolins, just to name a few. This new guitar is evidence that Gibson also makes the ugliest instruments. Do yourselves a favor and fire the people that designed this, then fire the people that approved its release. And stop needlessly killing innocent trees…

Pontiac Aztec!!! Ouch!!!

There were a few positive comments but far more slams and to Gibson’s credit, or Gibson dropping the ball and not having someone on delete duty, they haven’t edited the comments.

Looks to me like someone tried to make an SG only ‘edgier’… missed and hit ‘uglier’.

It’s a bit glam-tastic, but without the sequins. I’d buy one, but only to store it away until it’s worth something.

Looking at it again (I had to look away as it made my eyes hurt), if they’d gone with chrome pup covers I might actually have *almost* liked it… those red ones are hideous!

  3. I wonder how it handles… maybe its Alfa Romeo Red is just the paint they had laying around the shop; and it actually has guts and balance? and its Looks are second’ry…? Maybe it will take a bullet for you?

oh yeah, now I see the pup’s, that makes it look like that guitar-hero game bezel.. or?

  4. Jayne d'Arcy says:

It looks like someone stole Elvis Presley’s stand up costume collar and slapped it on a guitar.

  5. OMG!! Jayne that is what I was seeing, but didn’t realize till you said so… Elvis ’s dickie… holy shyte, Batman…. I feel like its going to roll up and hit me in the chin any second now!!

  6. Jammers says:

Funny thing I LOVED it since I first laid eyes on it. Temptation got the best of me and I went down to the local Gibson dealer and ordered one. I can’t wait to get it!!
