The best song in the world, right now this morning (4-13-09) is…

“Never Say Goodbye-Variations on Layla” by Bill Connors. I remember, back in the day, that this track was included as a “sound sheet” record in Guitar Player Magazine.

Bill Connors is a formidable guitarist and one that’s often left out of the conversation.

As always, fearlessly approach the interpretation of “sacred” themes then click pause on the music player located in the side bar to your left before playing the YouTube.

Canadian fans are reserved?? heh, I’ve seen clips of Iron Maiden playing Canada, and reserved is not the word I would have used. Maybe Billy Bob needs to check his ego in at the border.

Awesome find! Remember Connor’s was the RTF guitarist before DiMeola.

Funny you should mention the old GP sound sheets! I have a bunch of ‘em in a manila folder, i.e. Vai – Attitude Song, Satch – Crush of Love, Steve Morse demoing EV speakers, Yngwie’s Black Star.

Some of that stuff made it’s debut as teasers on those sound sheets before the actual albums were released.

Sound sheets were pretty well pressed if I recall right. Vinyl quality sucked in the 80′s as the industry was gearing up for CDs, not servicing their lathes and using crap vinyl (except for outfits like Windham Hill & EMI). But I don’t recall ever getting a bad sound sheet– too thin to warp! LOL;)))

I always liked the sound sheets. My favorite was Satch’s “Crush of Love”. Connors is an amazing player. I think he released a CD in the last couple of years that is more of a straight- ahead jazz feel.

“Black Star” was a soundsheet? That’s one of the best songs off Yngwie’s first album, ergo one of the best songs Yngwie ever recorded.

I have a John Fahey version that’s him and a slide guy, and it’s note-perfect until the coda, then takes off, as it should be.

That is a good ‘un, but the underlying track …

There’s a show EC recorded sometime in the 80s, post-sobriety and post-Michelob, with Greg on bass. It was an 80s production take on the works of EC, including “Layla”, and I never liked the drum and bass sound. This has that in spades. Which is probably connected to when it was recorded.
