  1. ‘First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. “Oh, Debbie. Hi.” Two, you always call the shots. “Kiss me. You won’t regret it.” Now three, act like wherever you are, that’s the place to be. “Isn’t this great?” Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It’s a classy move. “Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice.” And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV. ‘ — Mike, Damone, Fast Times at Ridgemont High

    Gotta go with Mike there.

  2. This one is real tough but I’m goin’ with Zep, simply because of the contrasts between the tunes. Dark Side has more continuity in terms of production vibe and flow, which is good sometimes, but Zep IV has different terrains and climates.

Coming of age/rite of passage records. Smoked dope on a thousand bean bag chairs to Dark Side. Drank beer at a thousand keggers to IV.

    Riffs v. Atmosphere.

Moon syncs up to Wizard of Oz. IV syncs up to some Lord of the Rings movie.

I’ve never purchased IV but, did buy Moon on 8 track at Radio Shack. That being said…I may have heard Zep IV in it’s entirety more times.

When it comes down to making out…put on some Marvin Gaye.

If sent to a FEMA camp where only one record would be played repeatedly as a mind control technique, I would vote for Zep IV but request that “Stairway” be dropped and replaced “Brain Damage”.

  4. If you ask me, side one of IV has back to back great songs – “Rock and Roll”, “Black Dog”, “Battle of Evermore” and “Stairway” – but side two has a better flow and would work better flow for making out, without being as obvious as Marvin. Not that I ever used it as such. And neither did they. If you notice, the Led Zep song they use is “Kashmir”.

For a good long time, I’d say from 1988 to some time in the middle part of this decade, I was on a Led Zep fast. If it was on the radio, I’d change stations. I certainly wouldn’t choose it. Except for “(Hey Hey) What Can I Do?”, the b-side of “Immigrant Song”. I’ve since recovered.

  5. Ooops, I thought for aminute there I had traversed into Jayne’s Blog… Twilight Moon and all that.

In light of recent discoveries, water found on the dark side of the moon, Pink FLoyd has the edge in my mind. Pink is the color of Rage.

Led is the element that could never fly, no matter how much helium, hydrogen or hot air one put in it; I know from experience. Most of my stuff goes over like a lead zeppelin.

43 million at 10 royaltiy, times 10% earnings, times 20 years… I remember a distant fact that it costs $500 million to send one probe to Mars. So I am saying Pink Floyd could afford a trip to the Dark Side, and play back his Opus via microwave planar speaker systems to Earth and beyond. A feat that transcends even the most ambitious thinker songwriters. NO? is it the Pink-Floysamus effect arising in the sky? something poor Led IV could not do, they can’t fly.

Okay, make out songs are completely different: Brown Eyed Girl, Love Potion #9, Monster Mash, and others come to mind. I toked lots of bean bag chairs on thousands of pounds of medicinal weed obsconded by army buddies from Ft Sam Houston, while listening to Joe Walsh, Jerry Jeff Walker and DSM… Leon Russell usually was the last thing I heard as I drifted off to slumber, back to the island. No I didn’t do drugs, but drank my share of beer and such. . confessions?

But the song that is the heart and soul of my existence is Let the Good Times Roll
    … birdsongful, joyful, territorial

I had to write this comment twice because the new Pribe’s keeps sending my comments to the trash, saying “it looks a bit spammy to us…” eh?

Since the whole theme of this clash of titans today is about territory, I say PF DSM — final answer. Take us out Jimi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZjeIeftWL4

  6. I suppose someone should compare and contrast Sandy Denny vs Claire Torry.

    Sandy v. Claire-both top notch

re: Marvin Gaye/obvious-you don’t start with “Let’s Get It On”, kick off with “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” to avoid being obvious lyrical content wise. It’s the groove that holds the magic.

    re: WTF! Jerry Jeff Walker???????

  8. Hey, FYI, just checking to see if you still read your own column and comments, Pribek.

I’m glad you guys spoke up about mistresses Denny vs Torry, I can’t detect any fissures there to bludgeon … which is about the push on the original test subjects of this Friday Cage DRAW Match. Arrrrrghhh!

(See latest post, 11.25.2009\pribek nation, about death of Music Industry as we have known it..)…which I just read, and have this to say: … we might want to look into organic success in music versus synthetic minimalized\marginalized success in music … WITHOUT POINTING FINGERS, for once… and try to answer WHY … and like you all USUALLY do in final thoughts: find a solution, or two. Eh?

This is the 73rd FNCM…AA, and you have narrowed down, vetted [pribek's word], contestants, to a point where we have two heavy-weighted\Jupiter-mass legend champions IV and DSM in the cage … yet still have Joe Rogan as our announcer? The imbalance is testing your uni-music-verses, stretching out imaginations and depleting resources.

Is it just my triple-threat-brain, three pesons in one, or has anyone other seen connections that has us arriving at FNCM…AA #73?

Entertainment context: song, dance or photo\cinema =

… I might start a timeline at cinema Gone With the Wind and Carpetbaggers’ assaults on rural AMerica as flim flam men, snake oil hawkers, or start before or at Wiz of OZ movie … build up to imaginative Leo Fender’s segue … to ‘69 moon landing broadcast on TV … through to denial by imaginative writer of DSM that no one he knows could have put Wiz of Oz to DSM … zip through Super Bowl Shufflin’ Bears … to born in the USA lonesome cosboy, guitar-blue-jean intra-nation leader of the world. ?? that’s a long question.

Were they all organic developments, or were these episodes all inclusive master PLANS by AIG, Beijing Branch?

Say thank you now; because I am this far *[]* from telling a miserable anecdote of what my mom said to my dad the other day… you are spared. Prego.
