Pat Darnell went through the comments from the guitar instrumental album post the other day and put together this incredible chart including links to music from all the records mentioned.

  1. Aye Mate … we have no “Best Category” to point to, actually since the list is huge, and diverse, and really very comprehensive from absolutely trustworthy commentators….

This is just a slight correction/addition to the spread sheet regarding my albums of choice. Though Miles Davis composed the original song “So What” the version I am speaking of is on the “Centrifugal Funk” album by the Mike Varney Project featuring Shawn Lane, Brett Garsed, and Frank Gambale. This song in addition to “Hey Tee Bone” and others are on that record and should be checked out. Lane, like many fusion player garnered inspiration from horn players like Charlie Parker and Davis, but also fashioned a lot of his stylistic phrasing after the piano player Art Tatum, who, if you have ever seen a video of, was friggin’ amazing. Shawn often said he consided it more of a complement to be compared to Tatum than any other musician save Allan Holdsworth (who oddly did not make our list of albums). Either way, just wanted to add some clarification. Thanks.

  4. Thanks Rodney, I was swimming in over my head when I got to your part of the above lists… so glad you could straighten that out for me.

Trouble with Lists? they take the fun out of the Dancing about Architecture… the response was so varied that maybe musicians will consider how much we all love Instrumentals and Talk Radio.

  7. Ron Roskowske says:

    Hi,
I had posted one on Facebook, but not on the Pribek site- “Blow by Blow” by Jeff Beck- one of my favorites.

  8. Jack: Go ahead and add the “Freak Guitar- The Road Less Traveled” album by Mattias IA Eklundh for me. Probably the ultimate, quintessential geek guitar instrumental album. Not simply shred, it includes a Django interpretation of Kiss’ Detroit Rock City. Also check out the tune “Minor Swing”.
