It took me a while to like Billy. I think “Pressure” and “Still Rock’n'Roll To Me” are the two Billy songs I like. And the doo-wop one, “For The Longest Time”. But the more that Billy rocks, the more I like Billy. Seeing as Billy made his bones by sensitive singer-songwriter soft-rocking the airwaves, there’s just not much overlap, which is sad, because he could really be a Beau Brummel, baby, if he just gave it half a chance.
Elton has kind of descended into that position, but for all the goofy outfits and mellow bye-bye-Marilyn bits that come, he brings it. Yeah, “Crocodile Rock” and “Benny and the Jets” and “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and of course, the massive “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding”. “Saturday” brings a Stones-size groove.
So, I gotta go with Elton.

I got to go with Elton. It’s kind of strange though…to me, it seems that his artistry has a retroactive timeline. The older the Elton the better. Not long ago, I heard a recording of his legendary 1970 show at the Troubadour (maybe it was at Wolfgang’s Vault?). He was playing in a trio format and the performance was badass! Raw energy and tight as hard times.
I got nothing against Bill Joel…wouldn’t take a ride with him…but, nothing he did ever hit me where the dogs of society howl.
WHAT! Not a one of yous’e mentions musician versus a guitar slinger? One carries its trade on its shoulder; the other requires an Act of Congress to get his instrument on a stage somewhere, in tune and somewhat elegant.
One has six strings, the other has 263 or something??? In an era of guitar [slash] rockers spanning several generations,,, anti-music poor pit’ful me axe murdering un-genre-factoidal smashing kits… , are two standouts… Elton and Billy… only two and they are pitted against each other?
Shame on this field of commentators… shame shame shame.
I sure thought there were some guitar players out there. Don’t kill the piano players, there’s only two of them.
Anyone mind if I continue with the “giant slugs” personifications and metaphors for tonight’s cage match? I think it will work …
I’m fine with it.
