There’s No Business Like No Business

February 4, 2011 · Posted in Music Business, News

You may have noticed that I haven’t been writing about the music business much. It’s a drag man.

I spent a good deal of time shouting from the rooftops about what was coming and now it’s here and I don’t have the heart. I don’t even read much music news anymore. I do still subscribe to the Digital Music News because, Resnikoff and crew are really good. Here are a few sample headlines and text from today’s stories…

Wow, YouTube Really Thinks We’re That Stupid…

Sorry, the gig is up on free music. It isn’t making bands rich, or even making ends meet, for that matter.

Is This Just Going to Zero? Sony Music Sales Drop 14.5%…

At least a rollercoaster goes back up again. But the picture on recorded music is looking more like a bottomless pit every day. In fact, the latest results raise the question of whether a bottom will ever materialize – or, if physical music merely erodes to something resembling zero.

*This keeps getting worse. There’s now another all-time lowest-selling number one album. Amos Lee’s Mission Bell just topped the US-based album charts with sales of 40,500 units. That beats recent records by Taylor Swift and Cake.

ouch…

So I’m reading about The Wrecking Crew, next thing I wind up here, some music starts playing. What the hell is this?? Well this is really, really good. I got sucked in. Real music like this is in short supply these days. Might have to buy the CD, and I never buy CD’s anymore. From a fellow guitar player. I used to play in band called Snake Oil Willie. lol

The music business whores did themselves in. I’ll never forget when vinyl was $5.99. CD’s came out at $16.99. We were told as more plants came online, this price would come down. Never did, and cd’s actually cost less to produce than vinyl. They got what they deserve. Sorry.
