“Summertime Blues”
Set of Possible Outcomes “Summertime [S]” contains subset “Summertime Blues [Sb]”
([S {Sb}])
________________________
/ (divided by) Subset “African American folk music” [AAfm] x (times) Pentatonic Scale [PS]
Derivation Notes:
1. Porgy and Bess 1935 co-writers Ira and George Gershwin, and DuBose Heyward’s lyrics for [S] wrote as an aria for that musical.
2. “Gershwin was remarkably successful in his intent to have this sound like a folk song. This is reinforced by his extensive use of the pentatonic scale (C-D-E-G-A) in the context of the A minor tonality and a slow-moving harmonic progression that suggests a “blues.” (Y Ikki Peed Ya)
3. Melody for [S] inspired by Ukrainian folk song “?? ?????? ???” arranged by Oleksander Koshetz. Performance: Academic choir of Vinnica. Conductor – Witaly Gazinsky HERE
4. “Summertime” is one of the most copied and recorded songs in history.
5. Set – Subset argument is like: John Cougar *x* John Mellencamp descendant of German immigrant Johann Herman Möhlenkamp … and went through many name changes. Who knows why …! But, tonight’s cage match is a “John Cougar — John Mellencamp” derivation of “roots” in music bidness bliss and marketing rigors, and which name to use. We might take our problem to the United Nations.
6. “Roots Rock” root-like rhizomes will sprout many buds … originally much like Eddie Cochran’s [Sb].
7. Summer is the time of year for slowing down of elements of living, as well as speeding up of various activities. Growth of sappy vines, and red oak trees ministered by pollen laden bees and hummingbirds, describes Summer. But the heat of Summer makes some elements vibrate quickly on a scale not seen in cold Winter.
8. Heyward’s “Summertime [S]” is about living in Summer; Cochran’s “Summertime Blues [Sb]” is about making a living even though it is Summertime. Ain’t no cure.
9. Nice cut Mr Direction.
10. Good night, Good morning, jurists.

[Andrea and Bono]
Ohhhh….summer wine
Dave-I think it can all be summed up with a round of “Six Degrees Of Separation From J.J. Cale”.
1.Miles did a great “Summertime”

2.Coltrane played with Miles
3.Tom Dowd engineered many of Trane’s best sides
4.Dowd produced Cream
5.Clapton had a huge hit wit “Cocaine”
6.J.J. Cale engineered the Blue Cheer version of “Summertime Blues”
PD…change it, it’s folk music!
