That would be like making a movie that doesn’t suck!
Found a couple of interesting quotes over at Rolling Stone about the big new Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side, starring Andre 3000.
As I’m sure you’re aware, the film will not be featuring any of Hendrix’ original music but, will have a LA-Yo Cat, power trio doing some covers in the Hendrixian mode.
Anyway, to the quotes. First up is the movie producer, Sean McKittrick…
McKittrick says that focusing on early stories about Hendrix – like the times he jammed with Cream and met Eric Clapton – is preferable to a biopic about Hendrix’s full life story. “That would be like making a movie about Kurt Cobain,” he says. “We all know how that story ends.”
Uhunh….OK then, now we have a “representative” of the Hendrix estate…
“They want to make a Jimi Hendrix movie without Jimi Hendrix music,” says the estate representative. “It would be like making a movie about Lincoln without being able to use the Gettysburg Address.”
Yep…they both used the old “would be like” gambit and, in the same article.
But, aside from showing off their cliche skills from PR 101, both sources are way off base because, we would all totally watch a Kurt Cobain movie and an Abe Lincoln movie without vampires the Gettysburg Address sounds delightful. I would actually pay good money to see a Kurt Cobain movie where he recites the Gettysburg Address…now we’re talkin’!
Maybe, these guys should all just go back to the drawing board and make a biopic about a fictional musician and write a bunch of songs specifically for that movie that won’t have any legacy estate ties.
You know what that would be like?
