Friday Night Cage Match/Fondue Party/Evolving Conversation/Dancing About Architecture Vol. 148

It’s a big movie weekend and, by all accounts, The Amazing Spider Man promises to be #1 at the box office.

Are they really not making them like they used to? Or…maybe they’re making them better.

50 years ago, this week, Birdman of Alcatraz was #1

40 years ago, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes

30 years ago, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

20 years ago, Batman Returns

10 years ago, Men in Black II

So…let’s say you have your favorite snacks lined up and your best boy or girl by your side…and you can choose any of the above, including the current blockbuster…

hmm…I’m going the other direction. Was just thinking about settling in and seeing Netflix has Bird Man.

I have never seen “Birdman”…don.t know why cause I love classic movies….

just checked, they don’t have it at netflix but Amazon has it for $2.99 so….it now becomes an “if we are going to pay 3 bucks for it, there’s a zillion other ones that we might want to see instead” situation…..

The dancing Hot dog, shuffling off to Buffalo with Soda and Popcorn … “Let’s go to the Lobby and get some …” is the joy of going to the theater to watch the 4th of any July barn burner. But this is a “stay at home event this year.”

I mean, the snacks is the constant in all the choices above and thanks for including it in the photo montage.

“ET” was on the cable on July the 4th, pre-operations to her face Michelle Pfeiffer… “Planet of the Apes” was on the night before fireworks, and “MIIB” is on every other week … so the choice is to:watch — “with commercial interruptions,” or go to Amazon Premium and “get some on demand, with no commercial interruptions.”

But unsung masterpieces exist out there, and one gets turned around searching for the right choice.

So I, as is my certainty to do, write in a movie to spend 90 minutes with, “Singing in the Rain.” Now one could wait to see that one on TCM which is the only cable channel with no commercial interruptions, but you might have to wait till 1AM.

*[Yes, I took tap lessons when I was 8, and performed in VFW Halls and Old Folk's Homes back in my shuffle ball change days... but that is a visual no one needs this morning]*

*[And did anyone ever see "Trapeze" a 1956 circus film directed by Carol Reed and starring Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida, making her debut in American films.]*

Fourth of July is a reminder of war, and blood, and honor, and therefore, I wonder why there is after all a combination of 4th of July fireworks with a Blockbuster Movie Opening in first place?

So, back to the choices, I see there are several Sci Fi choices and one story about a real person Robert Stroud, the famous “Birdman of Alcatraz,” is released from solitary confinement for the first time since 1916…. “Bird Man of Alcatraz” with B Lancaster, is my choice, and I would Dish out the 2 Buck 99 for it on the tube via NetFlix for the Fourth’s entertainment; pop some microwave popcorn, slam it with a Diet Coke, and sink it all with some foot long ballParks… and ah jeez, get out the lawn chair for the fireworks.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

the 2 Buck 99 would have been money well spent. Instead, we realized we had a whole bunch of stuff in the queue at netfilix and ended up watching this instead. The worst kind of bad movie is one that starts out OK and doesn’t really show it’s banal and insipid true colors until you’ve already gone too far to turn back. However, your snack comments are true…even a movie that is so bad it doesn’t fall in to the “so bad, it’s good” category is tolerable with Blue Bell ice cream.

    Singing In The Rain=great movie
    Trapeze=great movie

The day celebrated for the unanimous vote by a plurality of Colonial Americans to separate from and no longer be subject to the Monarch of England and further more drafting and signing a Declaration stating such so eloquently and with a finality that stands all tests of time, so far, wouldn’t be complete without the musings of several bards and fine gentlemen as yourselves, about the event we are so want to celebrate. I’m in total awe that Blue Bell is available in the fair State of Missouri, a product of contented cows, for sure. I wanted to mention one of my favorite refreshments of this raucous and totally American party, the noble watermelon. Being a total sap for baseball, Burt Lancaster and sweet corn, I’m tossing out “Field of Dreams” for your consideration, even though it doesn’t fit all parameters. Happy Birthday, America and “mis Chulos”…carry on.

Long live the Watermelon… cooled in a ice chest, brought out after the touch football game and sliced into wedges on the picnic table at Hermann Park. Sssssss …

    …sssssss!
