My All-Time Favorite Squirrel
We have a neighbor in the apartment next door. For some reason, this guy throws garbage out the back door. It’s always vegetable matter, not meat or old cans…lot of corn husks, tomato parts, cabbage remnants, stuff like that.
I don’t know why he does this. It’s slightly annoying blah blah blah.
Anyway, the other day I noticed a squirrel was carrying some of this stuff off and I caught him nibbling on a corn cob.
Yesterday afternoon, we had a downpour and afterwords it was nice and sunny. I walked out the back door and there was a mighty rush of blackbirds taking flight right in front of me. I could hear the wings flapping. Must have been 50 of ‘em. They were in to this pile of corn husks that had been scattered by the mower.
Anyway, after these birds took flight, my little buddy popped his head up from under one of these husks…like he was laying low waiting for the blackbirds to split! Then he started munching on a rain-softened corn cob. Looked like he was really enjoying himself. I stepped in to grab my camera and he started to run off but, he was trying to take that corn cob with him! Had it lodged between his front paws but, gave up the groceries to make for his tree.
So…today I walked out, looked over at the tree and noticed there were several of those cobs at the foot of the tree. I stepped over to get a look at how many the little guy had transported and as I got closer I saw he was standing there just flat going to town on one! I edged a bit closer and he grabbed that cob between his paws and climbed the tree.
This time he waited for me to get back with the camera. Best I got with no zoom…
