Behold The Taper
Got a new piece of gear…
Yep, a Dunlop Harris Tapered Slide (Large).
Tapered as it’s bigger around (fatter wall too) at the end you play the heavier strings with. Lately, I’ve been using one of the various models of pseudo-Coricidin bottles but, I’ve had a little trouble with it as it’s pretty light weight and along with the neck radius on the Tele…seems like I’m fighting it. Should be effortless.
So, going quite heavy and brass too which, cuts through the mix on electric and I’ve always preferred it for acoustic. I’ve also started booking some solo acoustic gigs and will be doing some bottle neck stuff there.
I was a little geechy about the tapered bit but, I thought back to the old days when I used to cut up wine bottles and those were tapered (btw, it’s hard to find the thick green glass like the old, cheap wine bottles any more. Those were great for acoustic stuff too.), and I saw this clip of Leo Kottke using one so, I pulled the trigger…on the Vaseline machine Gun…..
It came in the mail Today and I’m liking it. One trick that the taper helps with is the notes-behind-the-slide stuff which, can be pretty useful (being able to get minor chords in G tuning opens up a ton of stuff for solo gigs).

I should do more slide stuff.
Behind the slide stuff is the gift that Sonny Landreth gave us.
Yeah, that’s the first guy I saw do that. Sonny does a lot of double stops with the technique. I mainly try to catch a 3minor or 6minor in G tuning on acoustic but, I did find myself dabbling with it on the Tele the other night.
