I am a guitarist and songwriter. Over the past 30 years I have played music in a variety of settings and circumstance. I am currently recording a new collection of original songs.
My first C.D. “Trouble Ain’t Over” was released in 2006.
In between the time that I recorded “Trouble Ain’t Over” and the release of the disc, I began to experience some problems with my hands. These included constant numbness, tingling and a loss of dexterity. As a guitarist, this was a crushing blow but, I also had problems with simple tasks; tying my shoes, buttoning a shirt, opening a plastic bag, you get the picture.
It took a little while, about eight months, before I received a diagnosis of Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. During that period, under advice from my doctor, I did not play guitar at all. Since the diagnosis, I have played on a daily basis in an effort to regain my skill. Realizing that I would not be doing further damage, my doctor thought that this would be good physical therapy. This has turned out to be the case, my playing improves almost daily. It is kind of like going back to when I was 14-years-old and music was coming at me in leaps and bounds; all was new. I am also getting a little better at tying my shoes and buttoning shirts although, Zip-Loc bags seem to hold infinite mystery.
The disease has had an impact on every facet of my life, from work to personal relationships to spirituality.
Somewhere along the way, I started writing this blog. I realize now, that this writing has served as a sort of release for me. If you look at the archives you can find some places where I do talk about M.S. and my struggles with it but, most of the time, I write about other things that are on my mind.
I currently live in a 1973 Winnebago parked at an undisclosed R.V. park in the Ozark hills of southwest Missouri.
(Several months after I wrote this “about” post, I wrote another piece called “New Angles” that goes into further depth about my experience with M.S. “New Angles” is quite lengthy. The original intention was to talk about how the effects of M.S. specific to my guitar playing. Looking at it now, I realize that I went in to some philosophical territory as well. If you made it through the above words you may find it interesting.)
