I had the AccuRadio blues station playing this morning whilst getting my act together, bumpin’ and boppin’ round the ‘bago you know. They played a Muddy Waters track from one of the mid 70s records that Johnny Winter produced and played on. Forgive me as I’m going from memory not research here, there was one called “Hard Again” one called “I’m Ready”, a later release “King Bee” and maybe a live record.
It doesn’t get as much run as the early recordings but, it’s all good stuff. You know Mud was in his 60s and these records proved him to still be a vital performer. Johnny showed the right touch as a producer as well. He wasn’t trying to modernize, he was capturing a real blues outfit.
This video is of a great song, “Walkin’ Through The Park”. I always liked this song with the stutter step intro in to the shuffle. This clip is a lot of fun as Muddy brings Johnny on in the middle. Johnny plays a Les Paul which I haven’t seen him do a whole lot.
As always, nod briefly towards Chicago then whisper McKinley Morganfield three times through an open window facing the south then, click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.
I guess my favorite Muddy Waters story is one that a guy who was a white kid, suburban Chicago, harmonica prodigy told me. He was maybe 14 years old and somehow a friend of his found out where Mud lived. They went over there, knocked on the door and Muddy answered. So, this kid starts blowing the harp as soon as the door opens; showing off all of his chops. He finished his little exhibition and Mud, grinning from ear to ear, said; “That’s pretty good son, keep practicing and you’ll have something”. Then, Muddy said his wife was making sandwiches and he invited the two boys to come out in the backyard for a picnic by the pool.
I’ve been listening to AccuRadio for a while now. I like it a lot, good sound quality and some interesting channels-doesn’t seem to wonk out. Right now I’m listening to one of the Jazz channels; New School. Mingus “Pussy Cat Dues” is playing as I write.
I’ve tried a lot of other internet radio providers before but, this one seems to suit me best, so far.
I must say this though; A while back, Jayne convinced me to start using Firefox and it didn’t take me long to prefer it over IE. I had a few other internet radio spots that I frequented with IE that got real glitchy with Firefox. AccuRadio has worked seamlessly with Firefox, for me but, I haven’t tried it with IE so, it may be one of those FF deals.
