This is cute. Les Paul and Mary Ford from their T.V. show doing “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise”. Complete with Listerine ad at the start.

This song has a sweet melody-it’s a pop song, nice little love song, you know? It’s going along all nice and pretty, Mary Ford has that pure voice and then; Les launches in to this carnal assault of a guitar solo. It’s like he’s channeling instructions from Martians. He’s shredding, guitar heads-way back in the black and white ’50s. And then, it goes back to being a nice, polite little love song, as if this manic frenzy never happened.

I just always loved this track and when I saw this clip on YouTube, it got me to thinking; you don’t hear guitar solos on pop songs anymore. I’m sure there are some examples but, none come to my mind.

Anyway, I started thinking-What are my favorite guitar solos on pop songs? Well, I would include Les Paul on this one, and I came up with four more off the top of my head.

Amos Garrett’s solo on “Midnight At the Oasis” by Maria Muldaur

Peg-The Steely Dan song, solo by Jay Graydon

“Nowhere Man”-Beatles, solo by George Harrison (I’m assuming it’s George)

“Baker Street”-Gerry Rafferty, solo by Hugh Burns

So, enjoy Mary Ford singing sweetly while Les channels aliens and, while you are listening, think of this question…

What is the best guitar solo on a pop song?

Use your own criteria in defining “pop” song and “guitar solo”, for that matter.
