I’m just looking through some of the coverage of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto on the web. It seems to be pointing out a general problem.
So, you have Bhutto the first woman Prime Minister of an Islamic republic leaving an election rally when a gunman shot her in the neck and set off a bomb. Not far in to the B.B.C. story I saw this.
There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack. Analysts believe Islamist militants to be the most likely group behind it.
That’s the immediate thing thing that comes to mind; Who did it?
Then I went over to C.N.N. I went through the whole lead story and it’s mostly biographical stuff, very little about the assassination. So, I go to the next story they have, under the lead. I’m most of the way through it before I see this.
President Pervez Musharraf held an emergency meeting in the hours after the death, according to state media.
He said the killers were the same extremists that Pakistan is fighting a war against, and announced three days of national mourning.
C.N.N. can’t put a name on it. They can’t bring themselves to even say Islamist militants.
