Joseph Riddlebarger approaches songwriting with reckless abandon. I get a sense that every time he sits to work on a song, he feels like he is embarking on an adventure.
He doesn’t sound like somebody else. He doesn’t sound like he is trying to sound like somebody else. He calls his music; “Low-Fidelity Cries For Digital Mercy”.
He is a poet and a storyteller, sometimes he bares a little of his soul and sometimes he can make you smile. It’s not slick produced stuff, just a guy recording some songs that he’s writing.
I met him on MySpace a couple months back and I’ve been following along as he writes at a prolific rate. Every song is different musically and thematically, I have a feeling that I’m witness to his development in real time.
I really don’t know much about the guy, other than he lives in Dayton, Ohio. I don’t know the back story, I’ve been learning the story as I go by listening to the songs.
Last night he had a new one on there called “Visited By Kerouac”, a song about meeting the ghost of Jack Kerouac during a bar fight. It’s compelling.
