Gil Evans was a pianist, composer and arranger. I think he is probably best known for his work with Miles Davis. He also recorded with Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Cannonball Adderly and singers Pearl Bailey and Johnny Mathis. I have read that there was a project in the works to team Evans up with Jimi Hendrix.
Evans did release an album of Jimi’s songs in 1974. This clip of “Voodoo Chile” is from a Warsaw concert in 1976 and features Bob Stewart on tuba. A very interesting way to view Hendrix’ music from a different angle.
As always, pick up all the pieces and make an island then click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.
I had this friend way back who was talking to me about Hendrix. I could tell he had not really been listening so much because he kept talking about ‘Voodoo Chile’ but pronouncing ‘Chile” like the name of the country. So, it sounded like he was saying “Voodoo Chili”. I always thought that was a good marketing idea-Voodoo Chili.
