“Beck’s Bolero” followed by “Immigrant Song” ( w/ Jimmy Page and w/Bolero reprise) and the “Peter Gunn Theme” by Jeff Beck from the big Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hootenanny.

Vinnie Colaiuta – Drums
Tal Wilkenfeld – Bass
Jason Rebello – Keys

You know, the story going round is that Zep wanted to tour after Plant bailed but they couldn’t find a suitable front man. Mebbe, they should just get Beck to play Plant’s parts. That would be cool.

As always, Vinnie? Buttsiss? click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.

Let’s see…yesterday, we had Jimmy Page’s manager, Peter Mensch, saying this…

“They decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill – whatever their bill was at this stage in their career – that they’d make a record and go on tour… That’s what Jimmy Page does.”

That’s what Jimmy Page does folks. Today, Music Radar has Mensch saying this…

“Led Zeppelin are over! If you didn’t see them in 2007 [when they played a one-off reunion at London's O2 Arena], you missed them. It’s done. I can’t be any clearer than that.”

“They tried out a few singers, but no one worked out,” says Mensch. “That was it. The whole thing is completely over now. There are absolutely no plans for them to continue. Zero. Frankly, I wish everybody would stop talking about it.”

Don’t sugar coat it Mensch, how do you really feel?

Curious though, isn’t it? I mean, complete 180. This part is kind of interesting.

When asked what new projects Jimmy Page was going to be involved with in 2009, Mensch said, “Fuck if I know. I’m waiting to hear.”

That’s what Jimmy Page does…I’ll tell you this, I don’t think there’s a chance that I would pay a couple hundred bucks to see a Zep show, Plant or no but; I would throw down some serious cash to hear the messages on Peter Mensch’s iPhone from the last few days.

I ride to gigs with Allen (bass player Thirst N’ Howl) a lot of the time and he’s a huge Led Zeppelin fan. So, he’s always bringing up a Zep reference, talking about some song and, I’m terrible at the titles so, I never know which song he’s got in mind until I make him sing part of it. I realize that a lot of my youth was spent riding around in cars or at parties where Led Zeppelin was the soundtrack and because of that, I didn’t spend a lot of time listening to them on my own. I didn’t study the liner notes.

Anyhow, over the last couple of days, I got on a Zep kick. I’ve been listening to “Latter Days: Best of Led Zeppelin, Vol.2” because I had it handy.

1. The Song Remains the Same
2. No Quarter
3. Houses of the Holy
4. Trampled Under Foot
5. Kashmir
6. Ten Years Gone
7. Achilles Last Stand
8. Nobody’s Fault But Mine
9. All My Love
10. In the Evening

You know what? This stuff sounds good to me. It sounds fresh and one reason is, the chords. Jimmy Page isn’t above throwing a 9th chord or even the dreaded Maj.7th in there and, I’ve been missing nice chords in guitar music. Page, when playing chords, doesn’t use sounds that are so saturated that the overtone series prohibits the use of thirds and even extended notes. And, if you listen closely, even when he is playing a root/fifth power chord, his tone is cleaner than what you hear a lot of cats use. That’s why they are so powerful because he allowing some overtones, some air, and even though it’s only two notes, it’s musical.

And dig that bitchin’ B-Bender stuff in “All My Love” too.
