Joaquín.

I love the name Joaquín. It’s got a lilt, a musicality, it rrrrolls across the tongue. It’s mellifluous. If I ever change my name, it will be to Joaquín.

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard of the recent activities of Joaquin Phoenix. He announced he was going to quit acting, grew his hair and beard and is now pursuing a career as a rapper. All kinds of buzz going round; “Is he serious or just having us on?”

Even before all of that, Mr. Phoenix had cracked the top five list of my all-time favorite Joaquins. Just to remind you…

1. Joaquín Andújar (former St. Louis Cardinal’s pitcher)
2. Joaquin Lievano (excellent guitarist)
3. The Five Joaquins (gang of notorious bandits)
4. Joaquín Achúcarro (concert pianist)
5. Joaquin Phoenix

But, that was before last night when Phoenix appeared on the Letterman Show. On the strength of this single, esoteric effort, Joaquin Phoenix has moved up to number three on the top five list of my all-time favorite Joaquins. Here’s the clip.

As always, take out your gum then, click pause on the music player located in the side bar before playing the YouTube.

So, just to clarify, the revised version of the top five list of my all-time favorite Joaquins, now looks like this.

1. Joaquín Andújar (former St. Louis Cardinal’s pitcher)
2. Joaquin Lievano (excellent guitarist)
3. Joaquin Phoenix
4. The Five Joaquins (gang of notorious bandits)
5. Joaquín Achúcarro (concert pianist)
