A couple of clips here from drummers that demonstrate musicality.
The first one has Max Roach playing a solo on the hi-hat. Just the hi-hat and, he makes a musical statement. He also talks about the inspiration he got from Papa Jo Jones.
The second clip is a sweet solo by Papa Jo Jones.
Both of these guys use dynamic control and are able to tell a story, complete with dramatic and comic elements, via percussion.
